To find out the cause of tinnitus can often prove quite challenging. Sometimes a cause cannot be identified and so learning to cope with it is sometimes the only relief.

Tinnitus is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and any other accompanying symptoms should be explained to a doctor - dizziness, pain in ears, jaw or mouth, sensation of pressure, hearing loss etc.

The most common causes of tinnitus are loud noises, old age and ear blockages or infections.

Less common conditions can be tumours or Meniere’s disease - an abnormality in the inner ear. These are usually accompanied with a whole host of other symptoms.

High doses of medication such as aspirin, quinine, diuretics (water tablets), some antibiotics and chemotherapy can also be a cause of tinnitus.

Check the doses of any medication and make a note of them to take along to the doctor. Don’t forget that tonic water contains quinine (it gives it the bitter taste), so starting or an increase in quinine tablets plus a lot of tonic water may simply be the cause - stop the tonic water! If it still persists then consult your doctor about a dose change.

Although tinnitus is not harmful a medical opinion should be sought especially if it persists or gets worse. If there is no obvious cause to tinnitus then any advice on how to cope with it should be taken. It can become quite distressing living with tinnitus especially if there is little relief at nighttime and disrupts sleep.
