Causes Of Acne

Causes Of Acne

There have been a number of suggestions as to the causes of acne. However, a scientific approach to the cause of acne can be made. Acne develops when the pores of the skin are blocked. The pores of the skin get blocked when there is a high level of production of the natural oils of the body.

These natural oils, also referred to as sebum, mix together with the dead cells of the skin. Under these conditions, the naturally occurring bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes or simply P. acne, will cause the blocked area to inflame thereby resulting into an acne infection.

Acne presents itself in a number of ways. It can be through the presentation of White heads, blackheads or other forms of inflamed acne.

Other causes of acne

There are a number of factors that make a person susceptible to acne. They include:

Genetic history: An individual whose family suffers from acne is also likely to suffer from the same. Teenagers who suffer from acne have a genetic link or can be associated to an individual in their family who has or had acne at some point in their life. The kind of acne, whether mild, moderate or severe can also be associated to ones genetic link.

Stress levels: There isn’t any clear form of evidence to show that there is a direct link between acne and an individuals stress levels. However, studies carried out in most teenagers and even some adults showed that the severity of acne increased during times when the individuals were placed under stressful conditions.

Hormonal activity: Hormones have studied to show that they are the root cause of acne. The high levels of testosterone in both males and females cause an increase in the production of sebum. Sebum, a natural body oil, is what causes the blockage of the skin pores thereby playing an a huge role in the formation of acne.

Very active sebaceous glands are also cited as part of hormonal activities that cause acne.

Further, menstruation and puberty cause the body to release a number of hormones thereby accelerating the formation of acne.

Diet: There are number of foods that have been cited as sources of acne. However, there has been a debate as to whether the food we eat can be a direct cause of any skin condition. It is generally agreed different people react to different foods differently. Consequently, an individual should be aware of what particular food causes him or her which skin disorder.

Weight: An individual’s weight can also be closely related to acne. Obese individuals tend to have skin problems due to the over active metabolism of their bodies. Their glands work more and consequently release more natural body oils that can make them susceptible to acne.

On the other hand, those individuals who are trying to lose weight are also able to get acne. This is especially so when they try to loose weight in an unhealthy manner. Crash diets and hyperactivity stress the body and can lead to adverse effects on the body-acne included.

As seen above acne can be caused by a number of things. It is therefore important to know exactly what caused your condition before seeking any treatment.
