As a teacher who has changed careers himself, I can offer a little insight for you. As teachers we have valuable skills many companies covet, and if we package ourselves right, then we can find some rewarding opportunities.

First, many people do not understand the skills that teachers have. They think all teachers do is write on a board, talk, and grade. But, teaching is so much more than that stuff. As a teacher, you are facilitator, a councelor, a manager, an accountant, project manager, and a trainer all wrapped up into one. Highlight these skills in a resume. Remember that listing teaching accomplishments won't really impress hiring managers, but saying that you trained or managed can. For instance, I trained a journalism staff to use page maker, that translates well into corporate settings.

Second, find a career related your teaching experience. If you teach Math or Science, a second career as a journalist may not be the best choice, unless you specifically cover that area. However, there are many other areas where that background knowlegde is needed such as a public health eductor or working with the EPA as a field inspector. Likewise, a history teacher could find that working with the Department of Natural Resources as a Park Ranger could be rewarding.

As an English teacher, I chose writing. Of course, I am also cheating a little since my original degree is Communication not Education. So I had a little work experience in PR before I started teaching, but I have learned that several of my experiences as a teacher are assets.

Also, many companies like teachers for sales and mid-level management positions since most teachers are natural communicators and these poisitions require strong skills in this area.

Once you find a related field and complete an inventory of your skills, start networking. It is the best way to find out about unadvertised openings.

Like you, I also am transitioning out of the classroom and into the realm of...wanna guess?

Teacher education. It's a shame that so many of us with years of experience choose to take our experience out of the classroom. But for me, I really am looking forward to facing a new set of challenges and developing a new skill set focusing around adult education.

Great advice! I wish you the best. Leaving the classroom is like emerging from Purgatory. People just don't understand how bad it is.
