Theron was born in Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa. Her father was a construction company owner of French Huguenot. Her mother, Gerda, is of German descent and took over her husband's business after his death.

Theron's first language is Afrikaans. She is also fluent in English and speaks some Xhosa.

Charlize Theron grew up her parents' farm near Johannesburg (Benoni), South Africa, as the only child. She got an education as a ballet dancer and has danced both the "Swan Lake" and the "Nutcracker Suite".

At the age of 13, Theron was sent to boarding school and began her studies at the National School Of The Arts in Johannesburg.

At 15, Theron witnessed the death of her father (an abusive alcoholic), her mother shot him in self-defense when he attacked her. The police laid no charges against her.

At 16, she began modeling in Milan, Italy.

At the age of 18, her mother made her go to Los Angeles to try a career in the movie industry.
