Mopeds or motorized bicycles, have been an inexpensive way to travel around town on a limited budget since 1947.The term moped actually comes from combining motor and pedal and dropping the "-tor" and "-al". The first mopeds were just bicycles with a motor attached to lessen the amount of pedaling you had to do.

If you're like most people you want to get the best value for your buck. So how do you go about finding a cheap moped scooter that's not inferior? First, you have to determine how much you're willing to spend since moped prices can differ by quite a bit. Used will be cheaper than new obviously but I recommend going new if you can afford it. You don't want to inherit other people's problems. As long as you choose a solid make you shouldn't have any problem with your moped. Chinese makes and some other poor manufactures are another story.

If you do decide to go with the used path, make sure that the moped in question is street ready and and doesn't require a bunch of repairs. Cheap can sometimes mean that there is something wrong with the moped. Of course if you're handy with fixing things and can tackle the repairs, it can be a great way to save a lot of money.

Choosing The Right Low Cost Moped

With all the hundreds and hundreds of makes and models to consider how do you pick the right one? Well your best bet is almost always to go with a new make from a top manufacturer such as Honda, Vespa, SYM, Yamaha, Piaggio, Genuine, Suzuki, Fly, Lambretta, Italjet, Kymco, and several others. Like I said earlier buying used almost always leads to unexpected problems. Having your moped scooter brake down at the wrong time can be very dangerous and at the very least inconvenient.

An important thing to consider when buying a moped is if your state requires a license to drive your moped. Many states don't require one from small engine mopeds (under 50cc) but some will allow even higher (under 100cc). You don't want to risk unnecessary fines when all it takes is a couple minutes of research.

Insurance is always a good idea as well. Cheap moped insurance is a solid investment even if it isn't required by law in your state (although it is in many). You don't want to get into an accident and have to pay all the expenses out of your pocket. You can find inexpensive moped insurance if you look at the top auto insurance companies. You may pay in more than you get back but you can't live without it.

Remember these simples tips the next time you go shopping for a moped and you will be able to get a good deal on your cheap moped without sacrificing power or performance. And if you get the necessities (license and insurance) you will have a great time with your new cheap and fuel efficient ride.
