Mopeds (motorized scooters or bicycles) have been around since the late 1940's but the term wasn't used until 1952 when a Swedish journalist Harald Nielsen actually coined the word moped. He combined the two words motor and pedal, dropping the "-tor" and "-al".The first mopeds were just normal bicycles with motor attached to one of the wheels which allowed the rider to go faster and not have to pedal as much.

Mopeds may not be as fast as a motorcycles or cars but they still get the job done. There are many different kinds of mopeds - two wheeled, three wheeled, and hybrids (motor + pedals). Mopeds, like scooters, can be both electric or gas powered. Generally gas powered mopeds are faster and don't have to be recharged every 30 miles like electric powered ones. Also like scooters, mopeds are very fuel efficient and get great gas mileage. A moped can run for as much as 220 miles at a time on one tank of gas.

Different Types of Mopeds

Although mopeds are a popular form of transportation now it wasn't until the mid 1970's that they really began to catch on. In their early days, mopeds had very small engines that were not powerful enough to exceed more than 40 miles per hour so a lot of states within the country had restrictions and laws that prohibited them from being used on open roadways or freeways. But that is no longer the case as many mopeds can exceed 60 miles per hour now a days. There are still laws regulating the use of mopeds though. Most states require insurance for your moped to be street legal. Moped insurance would still be a good idea even if it wasn't required - you don't want to pay for damages or medical bills out of pocket if you get in an accident.

Finding Cheap Moped Insurance

It is human nature to want to get the best value you can for you money. There are tons of insurance companies out there so how do you pick the cheapest insurance provider that will still cover you sufficiently? Well you'll have to look at moped scooter insurance quotes from the top companies and see what they have to offer. Remember to make sure that you get multiple quotes because companies have varying rates. Why overpay for moped insurance when there are enough providers that will offer you a comparable policy for a lower price.

Some people believe that just because you drive a moped, you don't need insurance but they'll think differently if they get into an accident. Mopeds have the same risk as driving any other motor vehicle. You are responsible for any damages or medical bills that you incur in an accident.

Owning a moped is just like owning any other vehicle: you need the best coverage you can afford. Now that doesn't mean it needs to cost you an arm and a leg but you enough insurance to cover you or anyone else injured in an accident. When you shop for moped insurance always research the company and compare their rates and benefits. Also get more than one quote from each company. Mopeds are a popular low cost way to get around town but you must remember that you need a license and moped insurance to be legal and safe.

Funny how some people invest a whole heap of money into a car or a moped and then fail to pay attention to the insurance side of things. Madness. All it takes is a small mishap.
