Chihuahua information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Chihuahua breeders should not be difficult to find considering this is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. However, just because a breeder is so readily available does not mean you should purchase a chi whenever you feel inclined to do so. Impulse buying any dog is not a good idea. You need to make sure that you are completely ready for the animal and can provide him with a safe and nurturing environment for his complete lifespan.
Why shouldn't you buy from chihuahua breeders on impulse? There are two main reasons:
1.Questionable sources - Just because there are many breeders this does not mean that all are reputable. Irresponsible places (I.E. puppy mills, pet stores and backyard breeders) are only in it for the money, and the dogs they offer are often malnourished and susceptible to many health issues. If you don't take the time to interview and investigate the breeder, you won't know who you are dealing with.
2.Obtaining a dog for all the wrong reasons - For instance...
- Buying chihuahuas as a gift to your child because he or she wants one
- Wanting the dog because you think it's cute and your favourite celebrity owns one
- Your friend has one, they really like their pet and they think you should get one
These are all BAD reasons to become a chi owner. A pooch requires long term care, training and attention. If a person does not know the responsibility and financial commitment that is involved, and basic chihuahua characteristics, it is likely that the dog will eventually become neglected and abandoned to the humane society or local rescue.
Therefore, if you determine that chis are the breed for you, it is imperative that you know your facts so you can make a smart and educated decision when selecting this canine from chihuahua breeders. Here's what you need to bear in mind:
- Long life span - Chis can live up to 20 years
- Not suitable for young children - On average, these dogs do not like children and will snap at small kids.
- Small body equals larger risk of injury - Chihuahua's are recognized as the smallest dog breed in the world. They are very fragile, which means the dog needs to be handled gently. Furthermore, they have molera, which is a soft spot in the middle of the head where the skull has not fully closed. A single blow to this area could kill the dog. Note: due to their fragility, reputable chihuahua breeders will not allow you to take the dog home before it has reached 4 months of age.
- Chis dislike other animals - These pooches typically dislike other pets, and are usually only friendly to other chis.
- Shedding - Although some toy breeds do not shed, chihuahuas do.
- Needy of attention - Once one of these dogs bonds with their owner, they will want to be with this person all the time, and will follow them everywhere. This means they could become overprotective, and suffer separation anxiety when parted from their master.
As you can see, making an impulse purchase from chihuahua breeders is never something you should do. If you are serious about committing yourself to a dog, then take the necessary time to learn everything you can about them, as well as the person from whom you are purchasing the chi.
