A long haired chihuahua is identical to their shorthaired brothers in every aspect except for the obvious fact that their bodies are covered in long feathery fur, giving them an appearance that is not unlike a Pomeranian. Therefore, if you prefer the long-haired chi you should still expect a loving and devoted dog that is small, alert and full of spunk.

Although it is only the coat that makes the long haired chihuahua different, it is a difference that matters, especially when it comes to grooming. Chis with long fur have smooth undercoats and long overcoats. While their full body is covered in a generous amount of hair, the longer and more feathery areas include the ears, tail, front legs and mane.

That said, you should provide him with a coat in the winter when it is cold, as his hair will not be enough to keep his small body warm.
