The two important factors for a successful Chihuahua training are patience and consistency.

Chihuahua training is something you need to take very seriously if you would like your chi to grow up into a well balanced and gentle dog. Of course, if you want positive results, you need to provide your pooch with positive learning. Positive teaching is very simple. All you require is patience and consistency when training, and provide your dog with some treats and lots of praise when he pleases you and learns your commands.

That said, while there are different commands and lessons you can teach your canine, the following are 3 important chihuahua training tips for you to keep in mind:

1. House Training - Some chi owners do not concern themselves with housebreaking their dog. Due to the fact that he is so small, they see nothing wrong will letting him eliminate in their home on paper or puppy pads. This is not a good idea, because by teaching your dog this is acceptable, you are telling him indoors is the place for him to do his business. Thus, the next time your dog visits anyone's home, or another indoor facility, he will not know the difference and relieve himself.

House training needs to begin as soon as you bring your dog home. Take your pooch outside directly after he eats and shortly after he drinks, and every one and a half to two hours. You may also find a crate can assist you in achieving your goal.

2. Socialization - Socializing your pup is an essential part of chihuahua training. Chis can become very overprotective of their master and family. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, and have a low tolerance for small children. Therefore, to prevent your pet from becoming anti-social and aggressive towards strangers, you need to introduce him to different social situations. Keep in mind:

  • Situations should not be stressful or frightening
  • Begin socializing as soon as you obtain your pooch, before 3 months of age is ideal.
  • Invite friends and family members to meet your pal
  • Visit public areas that have open spaces, such as a park
  • Take your pup for brief car rides
  • Groom and inspect him daily

3. Teach your dog his place in your pack - Finally, a mild form of obedience chihuahua training is a must. Your pet must know his place in your family; his pack. Although you may have the desire to pick up your dog, refrain from coddling him all the time or holding him so his head is above your shoulder. Do not allow him to enter a door before you. Do not feed him from the table or give him attention when he whines for it. If you can not learn to dominate chihuahuas and make it clear to them you are the alpha male, he will assume this role and walk all over you. As a result, instead of a gentle and well balanced family pet, you will have one destructive and aggressive 5 pound dog commanding you.
