While choosing a tractor for yourself you need to know that tractor capabilities overlap with those of skid steer loaders, mini excavators, and loader. There are two main points to consider when choosing which type of equipment is right for you. To make sure you buy the right one first you need to consider a few questions like what kind of surface will be using it on? Muddy field? Pavement? Hilly terrain? What kind of attachements are you going to use for it? Will you be using the tractor during the day or night? And in what kind of weather?
Once you have the answers ready you can decide how much horsepower it will need. Horsepower determines what kind of work the tractor will be able to perform and what type of attachments it can run. And yes of course - how much you will have to pay for it.
Tractors with less than 25HP are able to handle the most basic jobs - basic lawn work but these are never good enough for heavy brush mowing or any other much more demanding job. Between 25 to 65HP tractors are meant for horse farms, nurseries and other commercial uses. Above 65 HP tractors are for strenuous jobs like tilling fields and baling hay. The largest tractors for commercial farming feature 200 HP engines or even larger.
But be careful about one thing i.e. some attachments have more specific HP requirements than others and in some tractors, the horsepower available to attachments through the power take off connection is less than the overall engine horsepower. So check these before buying.
Once you know the range of horsepower you can decide on the models and brand names by talking with the dealer.
Now you need to consider the various features of the tractor you are about to buy. A four wheel drive is necessary if you want to use a loader on the front of the tractor. These tractors have better resale value. However, a four wheel drive do not offer any real advantage when it comes to mowing on relatively level ground. A two wheel drive is of course a better choice when you need to cover long distances at road speeds.
Enclosed cabs are becoming a more popular option with new tractors as they can highly increase operator's comfort level when working under the scorching sun or in freezing weather. Anything can be fairly added to these as well like air conditioner, a stereo or many other comforts. But sadly enclosed cabs are not available on all tractors.
Apart from manual transmissions now hydrostatic transmission is very popular. Consider which you want for yourself. If your operator is comfortable using a clutch then manual transmission is a better choice as you will save money and get a little more power.
All new tractors are required to come with rollover protection structures that greatly improve safety and used along with a seatbelt it prevents the chance of the operator being crushed in a rollover accident.
Other than these factors you need to check the types of tires and attachments you want for the tractor. And then you are ready for a new tractor.
