74How a boy from Madeira Island became so famous
His name, Cristiano Ronaldodos Santos Aveiro, most of us now him as Ronaldo, or CR7 or CR9, or Rooonaldo, or Roney, or C Ronaldo or Cristiano Ronaldo. Many other Ronaldo's in the past few years have conquered such success playing football (soccer), but this one is special, he's young, fantastic player and sells much more than the ones before.
He's very close to his family, being the youngest, he has two sisters (Elma born 1974 and Liliana Cátia born 1976) and a brother (Hugo, born 1975).
But everything started on the 5th of February 1985, in a small village of Santo Antonio, near Funchal (Madeira Island). His first name was given due to the fact that he was born in a catholic traditional family, and his second name Ronaldo, was in honour of Ronald Regan the US president his father so much admired.
He started playing on the streets in his local neihbourhood in Quinta do Falcão, Santo Antonio. On his aniversary, he would ask family and friends for a soccer ball, just a soccer ball nothing more, his life was centered on playing soccer, even then he participated in local tournaments.
At age 8, his first official football team was CF Andorinha, where his father was responsible for the teams equipments. However at that age he was a Benfica fan, as was most of his family.
He soon was recruited (1995) to one of the Island first division team Nacional, he entered their school division with some help from his godfather. After one season at Nacional, and after winning the championship he was invited to for a 3 day trial at Sporting Lisbon
At age 11, he went to Lisbon to Sporting Lisbons academy. At the SportingAcademy, they helped Cristiano become the player he is today, he basically lived, played and studied their for a few years.
It was on the 14th of August 20002 that Cristiano had his first appearance on Sporting Lisbon first division team, it was his first game as a senior, with just 17 years of age.
His first official International game at Sporting Lisbon took place against Inter Milan (Champions League).
It didn't take long for Cristiano Ronaldo to be considered one of the most important team players in the Sporting Lisbon that season, and soon after the fame trailed. A year later, Sporting Lisbon inaugurated their new stadium with a friendly against Manchester United. Cristiano had a fantastic game and quickly became a priority for Manchester United, Sporting Lisbon made 15 million euros, and Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Manchester where he continued to show and improve his abilities as a player. It says that the Manchester United team players on the way home after the game in Lisbon, persuaded the coach Sir Alex Ferguson to buy.
His first game for the Portuguese national team was against Kazakhstan in August 2003. A year later was the Euro 2004, Portugal went to the finals, losing against Greece.
He spent 6 wonderful years at Manchester United, did about everything a young football player dreams to do.
His first season at Manchester was very exciting, a young player with some interesting dribblesand plays, in 39 appearances he scored 8 goals. His second season, didn't go quite the way expected, it averaged off lower than the first season, 2004/2005 50 games 9 goals. His third season went much better, becoming a more consistent player, nevertheless, one or other problem with the press and the World Cup zig-zag with his fellow team mate Wayne Rooney, in a England-Portugal game.
2006/2007 Manchester won the league title, with team effort, but with one shooting star Cristiano Ronaldo. The 2007/2008 undoubtedly his best season so far, he scored a record 42 goals in all competitions, most goals scored that year in the European Championships. Manchester United also won the Champions League that year which was the cherry on top of the cream.
His 2008/2009 season started late due to an ankle surgery which delayed his start. But 2008 is historical he was given the FIFPro Player of the Year award and in December 2008, became the first Manchester player after George Best to receive the Ballon d'Or trophy.
After his 3 championship with Man United, he felt it was time to face other challenges, with an incredible offer of 94 million euros from Real Madrid. In truth 2 records established, one for the most one club payed for a transfer, and second the most attendance for a player presentation, more than 80 thousand people at Santiago Barnabeu in Madrid to watch on site the official presentation of Cristiano Ronaldo.
So far he has had an unforgettable career, I hope he continues to honour his profession, buy giving his fans what they love, good plays, fabulous passes and unforgettable goals.
