Rationalizing a Church Fundraiser

With the many financial needs of churches, like supporting the pastor and staff as well as supporting missionaries, and maintaining the church building, many churches often look to fundraisers. However, many people ask, “Should churches engage themselves in fundraiser activities? Shouldn’t the church engage itself in religious activities rather than activities that are designed to create revenue, even if it is for the benefit of the church?”

Fundraisers are Biblically Encouraged

If you want an answer, you can go to the Christian Bible. Repeatedly throughout Acts, 2 Corinthians, and Philippians, the Bible has mentioned that the giving of “offerings” is blessed and encouraged by God. Hence, people in the ministry say that church fundraising activities are only normal as they are a way for the people to give to the Church. What the Bible discouraged, however, was collecting money for profit’s sake, garnering funds for no valuable purpose. Hence, it is already established that church fundraisers are not against the laws or the norms of the church. In fact, church fundraisers are usually necessary; after all, churches do not always have the appropriate funds for various needs and improvements in the church. Besides the usual offering, this is a great way to collect funds so the church can properly function. Church fundraising activities are, of course, usually no different from other fundraisers.

Guidelines for a Safe, Decent, and Profitable Church Fundraiser

However, there are a few guidelines you should acknowledge. A church fundraiser is not always limited to the religious, although the activity should never go against the teachings of the church. The theme of the activity should be wholesome and decent — young and old go to church, after all, and everyone should be able to attend the church fundraiser. The purpose of the church fundraiser should also be properly explained to everyone. Is the church fundraising held to collect funds for church construction, or is for another purpose? It should also be made clear that the church fundraiser is different from the usual church offertory. This means participation in the church fundraising is not required. Hence, the activity should also emphasize the importance of giving to the church. It should not be forced — but the church should also make sure the benefits of giving to and supporting church fundraising activities are properly explained.

Brainstorming Some Fundraising Ideas

There are several ideas for church fundraising activities that could be employed and utilized. After all, it is similar to the typical fundraisers. The sale of religious items such as candles, Bibles, and other similar merchandise are popular church fundraising items. However, churches fundraising are not limited to such ideas. It is so rare to find a church holding benefit dinners and concerts. All of these are acceptable as long as they do not hinder with the church’s beliefs. Churches can go to companies that provide church fundraising programs and items (such as discount cards and scrip). Of course, this isn’t required. Churches can also organize the activity themselves, using various tools (such as the fundraiser thermometer, an effective tool that can gauge the success of a fundraising activity). Holding a church fundraiser is acceptable and can be an effective means to get the necessary funds for the church.

My rule, as a pastor of a Southern Baptist Church, has been no fund-raisers. The reason is because if the church wants to do it and it is God's will then God will provide. All projects and mission endeavors begin with prayer to seek God's will. Every congregation should be able to pay for forever it is they need or want to do.
