Cleaning tile grout with a steamer
Cleaning tile grout with a steamer

One of the best ways of cleaning tile grout is by using a steamer. A steamer with the concentrator nozzle attachment.

The good thing about owning a steamer is that it has lots of uses around the house, making it a very versatile equipment. Asides being used for cleaning grime from floor tile grouts, cleaning oily grime on barbeque grills, stove tops, range hoods, etc, its use requires no harsh chemicals that is usually employed for cleaning tile grout, and there are no ghastly fumes to deal with.

Though not a cheap solution, but considering the fact that there are many things the steamer does well or better than conventional methods, in the long run it ends up being cheaper.

DON’T HAVE A STEAMER?

However, if you don’t have a steamer, or access to one, there are other effective ways to cleaning tile grout.

There is now a tool called grout file or a grout remover, which is so simple to use . all it does is to take a small layer of grout away leaving a nice clean finish. Using an anti-mould reviver after ensures that you are mould free for a very long time.

You can find these items in the tiling section of all hardware stores online or offline, or at janitorial supply outlets near you.

ANOTHER AVAILABLE OPTION

There is a wonderful, easy and convenient to use bleach pen, easy to apply and very effective in cleaning tile grout.

Another option available and effective in cleaning tile grout is to dip a toothbrush into neat bleach and rub it gently but with slight pressure over the grout line.

Leave it for an hour and then wash it all off with a clean damp cloth. This definitely works a treat.

VERY IMPORTANT: Never use bleach on coloured grout! It will discolour the grout.

SOME TIPS FOR CLEANING TILE GROUT

  • First try to clean grout with water and a brush. If that doesn't work, then try cleaning tile grout with household grout cleaners.
  • When using commercial cleaners such as bleach, or other grout cleaning chemicals, make sure the room where you are working in is well ventilated.
  • When cleaning tile grout with chemical based products, use gloves, and if the chemicals are very strong, use protective eye wear.
  • If ceramic tile grout is old, test the grout cleaner on a tiny concealed area first so as to make sure that it will not erode or damage the grout work.
  • Use a stiff brush or a new hard bristle toothbrush for scrubbing. Old toothbrushes are not ideal as they may be too soft and metal bristles will erode the grout.

VERY IMPORTANT: Never mix cleaners together because chemical reactions can cause toxic fumes, and burns may occur if the mixture comes in contact with the skin.

Bleach is good when the grout dirt is fairly bad. But a mildish bleach and nothing too strong.
