The size and quantity of the holes in the strainer or colander is probably the most imporant decision that you make when you buy one. If you only use your colander for draining spaghetti then the holes can be quite large. But if you like to drain rice or small pasta then with a large-holed colander you're going to lose some. So you want a colander with tiny tiny holes.
Some folks like to have their colander do double duty as a potato ricer. They stick the boiled potatoes in it and then use a mallet to push the potatoes through the holes. For this cooking chore, you really want medium to large holes - and lots of them. The colander should also be large to hold the potatoes.
If you cook small amounts of pasta or want to rinse some berries. Then a handheld strainer might do the trick as well. Look for a comfortable and strong handle, with a stabilizing handle across from it. So you can rest the handle on a bowl or pot.
