 The College Scholarships foundation, which can be found at www.collegescholarships.org.  Much like grants there are tons of scholarships out there for the taking. There are also thousands of websites out there, that just want your information and they’ll send you a “free guide” to all the free college scholarships out there. It is time consuming, confusing, and doesn’t get you very far. What can you do to find free college scholarships? The best place is to get scholarships from your local university. Talking to your academic counselor and financial advisor is the best way to find out what options there are for scholarships in your field of study.

 Dulce Munoz, described by a teacher as a hard-working, dedicated student, was named Monday as a recipient of the College Foundation Inc. Victor E. Bell Jr. Scholarship, worth up to $20,000.

 Maine West senior Chelsea Kellogg, the first member in the history of the Warriors' girls golf program to qualify for State, has earned an athletic scholarship to continue her golfing career at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. Kellogg signed her national letter-of-intent on Friday.

 The Sallie Mae Fund awarded $2 million in scholarships to 800 students nationally this year. The Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae in Reston, has awarded need-based scholarships to 5,700 students, totaling more than $14 million in aid, since 2001.The Fund partners with other groups such as the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic College Fund, The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education and Black Entertainment Television and ESSENCE magazine to benefit minority students with demonstrated need get financial aid for a college education. Among other scholarships, The “American Need” program awarded $500 to $5,000 each to 176 African-American students, and the “First in My Family” program provided $500 to $5,000 each to 169 Hispanic-American students who will be the first in their families to attend college.

In 2008, more than 24,000 completed applications, a record number, were submitted to The Fund by college-bound students across the country. By 2015, there will be an additional 5 million college-age individuals in the United States. Approximately 80 percent of this growth is projected to come from minority populations with greater financial need.

 The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans made two significant announcements today. The need-based scholarship provider announced its new representative for young scholars. World-renowned tenor and humanitarian, Mario Frangoulis will serve as the "International Ambassador for the Horatio Alger Association." The Association also stated today that it will offer scholarship programs in all 50 states beginning in 2010. In 2009, with support from its Members and friends, the Horatio Alger Association will have awarded more than $73 million in need-based college scholarships to deserving young people across the country.  The Wal-Mart Foundation is funding more than 2,500 scholarships of $3,000 for the 2009-10 school year. All high school seniors (including home schooled) maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA who are permanent residents of the United States may be eligible for the Sam Walton Scholarship.
