Buying a computer is never easy. Once you think you know what you want, and you find it a local retail store, you stop in only to find that the price is based on a combination of factors. The computer you want, for the price you need, is bundled into a computer retail package. These retail packages generally include a computer, a monitor and a printer. In other cases, when dealing with notebook computers, they deal with a notebook and printer. Sometimes retailers include other items into their package prices as well. At the end of all that shopping, it can be confusing for consumers to understand just what they paid and what they received.

Each retailer breaks down their computer packages a bit differently, but for the most part, they can be understood just the same. In most cases, the three primary parts of the package - for example, a computer, a monitor and a printer - will be discounted a certain amount to get the total amount you should pay for the package. If you only purchase two of the three components, you pay full price for each component. You will only get the package price if you purchase all three components exactly. Most retailers also offer upgrades to their packages, most notably when it comes to upgrading to a larger resolution monitor. Again, this difference is broken down between all three components when combined on a purchase receipt.

In other cases, you may find that the package comes with more than just a computer, monitor or printer; it may also come with a notebook carrying case, a flash drive or other accessories for either a desktop or notebook computer. In some stores, these smaller components do not need to be purchased, but they can be added in for additional savings. They complete the total package for your computer purchase, giving you everything you would need to enjoy your new system.

It is common practice for a retailer to offer the complete solution to consumers. This is how they come up with the packages and what comes in them. If you are looking for just a desktop computer or notebook, you may end up paying more for it than if you took the dive and purchased the whole package.
