Conference Call Definition

Conference call is defined by Wikipedia as a telephone call which includes more than one called party as wishes by the caller. The calling party will need to decide whether the called party can make a conversation during the call or whether they can only listen to the call and won't be able to speak during the call. The calling party can also call other party during the call to join them in the call conference. From this definition, a conference call is simply a voice call to many parties.

Conference Call Usage

Business

The largest industry which uses this technology of course is business. Companies use call conference everyday for client meetings or sales presentations, training classes and communication to employees who work in different locations. Having a call conference is cutting cost and make works more efficient and effective as workers could use their travel time for doing other works.

Education

Distance learning is not impossible anymore with the presence of conference call. Even a presentation task could be delivered easily without having a face to face meeting. Lecturers and professors can give a lecture to university students in many different places at the same time.

Social Network

People also make a conference call to socialize. You may know about Party Line which mostly targets teenagers who like to make new friends and talk for quite a long time. Most of this business has been down since the Internet has a better offer for social network such as Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, etc.

Politics

Conference call is also done by senators and presidents. They are limited with the time to visit all cities in order to give their campaign. Political campaign team will probably use conference call more because they have to give one instruction to many other team members in different places right away.

Video Conference

Video conference is different from call conference. In video conference there are parties in two or more locations who can interact through video and audio simultaneously. Video conference usually requires the Internet to transfer data.

In order to make a video conference, you need to have a video camera or webcam; a computer monitor, television or projector; microphones; loudspeakers and of course an Internet connection.

Today it is easy to make a video conference. If you know about Skype, then you can make a video conference by now.

You can also use P2PCAM for video conferencing. It uses a p2p distribution architecture that allows many users to view the same stream at the same time. You can also view multiple streams at the same time by opening multiple instances of the program.
