Worker injury and accident are one of the major expenses on any construction site. Construction companies are constantly faced with the dilemma of trying to make their work sites as safe as possible. While some business owners may see safety expenditures as unnecessary by taking just a few simple steps construction companies can improve the safety of their job sites and significantly cut down on worker accidents and injuries. A few of those steps are:
- Outfit their workers properly. One of the simplest, cheapest and most cost effective solutions to promoting safety on construction sites is to make sure all the workers on the job are outfitted properly. This means everyone has a hard hat (and that it is worn at the appropriate times), yellow or orange safety vests and brightly colored shirts (many companies are choosing a loud fluorescent green). This allows everyone to be spotted easily on the job site and also gives the added advantage of being able to easily identify who should be on the site.

- Daily maintenance and safety checks on all equipment. Construction companies are now realizing the value of daily safety checks on their large equipment. Most companies have now instituted a policy that requires workers to sign paperwork daily stating that the machinery on the job site has been checked and serviced on a daily basis. This allows workers to see small problems, fix them and hopefully avoid having large problems with machinery that can create a huge safety hazard.
- Create an atmosphere of teamwork. Construction companies are also working to promote teamwork within their ranks. Companies that successfully do this have found that their accident rates drop and morale significantly improves. This often includes having a safety manager who drives the momentum of the company toward safety on all work sites. Whether it is through structured retreats, team-building exercises or rewards for safe behavior promoting a team that watches out for each other creates a much safer environment on any construction site.
