Container Garden Design Inspirations

The really inspired container garden design are a delight to behold. Whether it be presented in courtyard, patio, balcony, or indoors, container gardens, done the right way, can provide a really satisfying ambience to your home. In this article, we provide the information for all those seeking to create just that.

As far as gardening goes, most of us are out looking for new information, new ideas and ways to do things. It doesn’t matter if you’re an old hand, or a new chum figuring ways to enhance the appearance of your patio garden, we will provide ways here in which you can do that. Deck and patio, veranda, balcony, whatever your container garden theme, you should be able to learn a something more from what is contained both on this page, and right throughout http://www.apartment-gardening-homes.com

Whatever you come up with it will be unique to you. Sure, there might be others like it. But none will be exactly the same. If you plan well, and visualize your container garden theme before carrying out the actual work, the result should be something distinctly yours, a place in which to relax, enjoy and contemplate life’s good things.

Do not think for a moment that your container garden design will be limited to only potted plants Interspersed throughout you can have statues, mini-water features, miniature rockeries, a tiny pond. You can have wall features, fence features. Then there are stone animals, lizards, frogs, sleeping pussy cats, weathered old boots, real or stone. And, course, a splendid array of garden gnomes, if this is the sort of thing you like.

The types of plant you have within your garden theme, whatever you eventually choose for that patio garden, can include edible plants: e.g. herbs, dwarf fruit trees, veggies. All of these can be presented in various ways, long trough-like containers, little pots, big ones, giant ones! You are limited only by your imagination and what your area can take.

You’re enthused? Good. So lets get to it.

Container Garden Designs & Entry areas

Entry Area – The use of large pots containing Topiary trees look fabulous. Plant groundcovers at the base of these trees. Some suggestions: Lobelia, Thyme or Sweet Violets to provide colour. Prefer green? Use Ivy, Mondo grass, Ajuga, Sedums or Ground Ivy.

Whatever is planted, it is important that the stem of the plant is not obscured. And leave some of that beautiful pot colour visible. Warning here regarding Ivy and trees. Ivy may grow up the stem and invade the tree and eventually strangle it. So keep an eye on this.

Courtyards, Deck and Patio Garden - The theme chosen will depend on what you wish to convey, the look and feel of the place. It’s up to you, of course. But we suggest you consider plenty of patterning and colour. The object here is not to have any particular feature dominating at the expense of the others. Endeavour to provide points of interest at every angle, and avoid one area being so predominant that it seems to overwhelm everything else.

Some great feature plants for courtyard decks and patios - Miniature Roses look fabulous, Green Pines create texture, African Marigold provide striking colour. However, a Dwarf Citrus can, in flower or when fruiting, provide all these.

Hot and Cold spots – Plants, like people, need the right environment. Choosing the correct plants can make or break a container garden design. Do your research to find the right container plant for your position.

Container Garden Designs & Themes

Asian Container Garden Designs – Use a mixture of ferns, palms, tropical plants, Asian stone-carved statues such as Balinese Gods, Buddha’s, and stone lanterns, and mossy rocks.

Tree ferns look fabulous placed in shady areas with Bromeliads below. This mix produces the welcome humidity that these plants need to survive. Around the outside, where splashes of sunlight reach corners of the garden, orchids can be positioned to produce wonderful displays of further colour.

Feng Shui Garden – The Feng Shui garden has a theme of flowing curves and avoids straight lines This is to allow the propitious flow of Chi. It needs to flow smoothly but not at great speed. Also, avoid sharp corners. The Feng Shi theme is generally found in the Asian Garden and, in particular, the gardens of the Chinese. Often found included in such settings are water features with fish, lilies and frogs. And native birds can be attracted by the judicious placing of bird baths and nesting places.

Edible Garden - The edible container garden design needs portability. It’s desirable to be able to easily move your containers around. Quite often you need to be able to chase the sunlight, from season to season, or even from hour to hour in some circumstances. Additionally, you may even be obliged to bring plants inside in really cold winter climes. So if you do intend to use large containers, buy those with wheels affixed to avoid back injuries. We suggest Dwarf fruit trees, or Papaya plants be put in readily movable containers.

And, of course, the use of a mini greenhouse is beneficial for early starting of seasonal edible plants.

Herbs and vegetables can be planted together in containers to create splashes of colour and interest. And doing it this way can also help not only growth-flavour but pest protection with the right companion planting combinations.

Traditional Garden – Straight lines, trimmed hedges, garden edges, pruned-into-shape trees, and perfect, manicured lawns. Many of us aspire for this traditional garden design theme. But in a small setting? On deck and patio? Is this possible? Yes it is. Creating a traditional container garden in such circumstances can be easier than you might think.

To create a Traditional Container Garden think Roses, Topiary-shaped trees and flowering bulbs. Also, flowering annuals placed carefully amongst the garden or alongside the garden’s edge. Generally, the theme is one of order.

Herbs such as the Lavender, Thyme and Rosemary can also be used to provide scents, flowers and architectural shape.

Hi, Marty: It so interesting, as I had clicked on this hub, to finish reading and then add my comments, but took a nap, and you made a comment on one of my hubs while I was napping. :) I am not very good with gardening and it bothers me as I like to see the beauty of nature. I lived all my life in apts in the NYC, and now live in a rural town with my s/o. For this reason, I so appreciate the ideas of your hub- I love the idea of a Feng Shui container garden, this is more doable for me. I like the tips you give in gardening decorating!

Thanks for this hub, and thumbs up!
