Cool tattoo designs

Before you rush out and get a cool tattoo, please read this - it could change your life! Getting a tattoo, I mean. Big, big decision - and not one to be rushed into headlong or without thinking long and hard.

A tattoo, unlike most things in life can't easily be discarded. Once a tattoo has been placed on your body it's there to stay. Not for a day, week or years but for EVER! If you make a mistake it's too late. You're stuck with your tattoo for a lifetime. Imagine having to spend the rest of your life trying to hide - or apologising for - the very thing you were once so proud of. Nightmare scenario, or what!

Statistics will tell you that over 40% of people who get a tattoo regret the decision a few weeks later. Most of them will think they know what they want - so how is it such a high percentage make such a dreadful mistake?

As an example, I'll tell you what happened to my niece Claire (aged 21). Claire is a lovely girl with a good job, a car, all the trimmings. When she announced last year that she wanted a tattoo put on her left shoulder, I gave her (in my role of cool and funky aunt) the same advice that I'm going to give you:

Take your time choosing a tattoo, I said. Have a look at lots of different designs, I persuaded. Get a stencil, I pleaded - and don't pick too many colours if the design is small..

And guess what? Did she listen to my persuading, begging and pleading? Nope, she did not! Off she went and did her own thing. t was about 6 months until I saw her again. asked about the tattoo - could I see it? At first she was evasive, not wanting to show it to me. Eventually, I managed to persuade her. An armlock did the trick!

When I saw the tattoo, I understood her reluctance. She'd changed her mind about the shoulder and gone for a lower back design - similar to the one in the photo above. But not NEARLY as good….the outline was blurred, the left side didn't match the right side and the colours were dull and faded.

Cool and funky aunts can hide their reactions - seeing that she was on the verge of tears, I wisely made no comment and calmly asked her where she'd got the design.

Claire had borrowed a book of tattoos from a friend and scanned her chosen design into her computer. The design was so small that she'd enlarged it. Then she'd printed it out and taken the resulting dog's breakfast - which is the only way I can describe it - to some unsuspecting tattoo artist as a template!!

I ask you - what chance did the tattoo artist have of doing a decent job? None at all!

At some point in the future, Claire will no doubt decide she just can't live with that tattoo anymore, and will spend $1,000's of dollars (and a significant amount of pain) getting it removed.

What Claire should have done

If she had just followed this simple advice, she would love her new tattoo and be delighted to wear it. And show it to Aunts…

  • First of all RELAX and take the pressure off yourself by taking all time you need to find a tattoo you'll love.
  • Decide what type of tattoo you'd like (Celtic, Tribal, dragon, rose - so many choices...)
  • Where on your body do you want it (lower back, shoulder, arm, leg?)
  • What size do you want? (remember - if your tattoo is too small, the colours may blur)
  • What colours would you like?

Ideally, you need to look at many, many different designs, and an excellent idea is to print your choice of tattoo on transfer paper and "try it on" before making your final decision - it may look totally different "on" you.
