Today, corticosteroid medications are very popular for treating many health conditions that involve inflammation.

They are commonly used for threating rheumatoid arthritis, other types of arthritis, liver inflammation (hepatitis), asthma, ulcerative colitis, Crohn`s colitis, allergy, various skin diseases as dermatitis, psoriasis ,excema, they are used for pnemonia, traumatic injuries, tumors,some types of cancer, various autoimmune diseases such as lupus and multiple sclerosis...list is very long. I believe that majority of diseases some doctor tried to treat with corticosteroids at the certain point.

They are produced in tablets, creams, injections, inhalators, syrups even rectal gels. I think that majority of us tried to use them, if not on another way, then in their mildest form - as hydrocortison cream for eyes or skin.

Corticosteroids are hormones of our adrenal glands, which are placed on the top of our kidneys. They have various important duties in the body like:

• Maintaining metabolic processes, such as raising blood sugar levels when is need for it.
• Regulating the balance of salt and water (mineralcorticosteroids), and cotrolling blood pressure
• Controlling the "fight or flight" response to stress through the raising blood sugar levels, blood pressure and surpressing inflammations in the times of stress.
• They help maintain pregnancy
• They are controlling sexual maturation during childhood and puberty
• They also controll normal function of kidneys

How do they do their most important function for this article, and this is - surpressing inflammation (they do not heal it) I will explain in next chapter.

Most interesting hormones which adrenal glands produce, are hormones of stress as adrenalin and cortisol (glocosteroid) are, which help us cope with potencially dangerous and challenging situations, when normal body reactions cease, and body comes in the state of highly tensed readiness to react in the extremely short period of time on any challenge - in this state we are able to do only two things - to fight or to run away from the danger. In this highly tensed state, blood sugar level raise up, blood pressure as well, heart starts to pump more blood, high levels of adrenalin and cortisol give to the body extra amount of energy which immediately - surpressess inflammation because body must do other important things then go through the whole process of self-healing. Remember - if you are in danger, you do not have time to be ill or in relaxed state of mind - so inflammation temporary stops (as I already mention - is surpressed).

But as soon danger is gone, body gradually comes again in relaxed state, blood sugar level drops down, blood pressure becomes normal, after that so often happens that inflammation or any other health problem is back again. All of us know that after periods in life where was a lot of stress and challenging situations, when finally everything passed by, often happened that we got some minor health disorder, or depression... which was surpressed in the times when we were under the stress.

Synthetic corticosteroids funcionate on the same basis as natural ones - they temporary give body opportunity to surpress inflammation. Usually they do not heal it. They inhibit natural body mechanisms against infection. Infection usually returns after stopping using them, it can be even worse, because body is used to corticosteroids, and need the "new dosage" again and again, without solving the initial health problem. Vicious circle is began.

So, corticosteroids bring body in the constant state of stress and tension, due to that, natural reactions of immune system are surpressed - because immune system works normally ONLY IN RELAXED STATE. On that way, using them, actually delays healing, what even doctors admitt. So they just temporary mask inflammation, as soon as they stop to work (after tablets this happens in few hours), problem is back and much worse then before.

 In addition to that, syntetic corticosteroids block natural corticosteroids to do their job, so they cause malfunction of adrenal glands, on all level what is really dangerous.

Syntetic corticosteroids (cortisol) confuse other hormonal glands, (especially pituitary gland (in the brain) which has duty to give orders to the body to realease corticosteroids. So everything looks like invasion and agression on all body systems - so all hormonal glands start to send and receive wrong hormonal messages which leads to overal hormonal imbalance - what is really dangerous.

Syntetic corticosteroids ( the same as natural) take over all neural receptors in the body (remember, when is danger, you do not have time for anything else), so there is no possibility to succeed by using natural methods of healing. Natural remedies cannot find free receptors to work with them, nerves are constantly tensed (there is no healing when nerves are tensed), body does not regenerate (when level of corticosteroids is high, process of regenaration is not happening to any body cell, nor tissues on any level) instead of regeneration, all body organs, tissues and cells start deteriorating and malfunctioning.

Because corticosteroids block natural immune response and do not allow that healing process starts, doctors precribe another drugs - like antibacterial, antiviral, even immunosurpressants (do not ask me why immunosurpressants - probably to destroy the immune system completely), and all possible combinations of medications which further destroy already destroyed and exchausted body.

Long term use of corticosteroids is - just pure destruction of the body. Effective path to death.

They create completely new illness called Cushing´s disease, which I will shortly describe in next chapter.

The potent effect of corticosteroids results in serious side effects, creating Cushing's disease, a serious malfunction of the adrenal glands resulting in an overproduction of cortisol (hormon of stress). The list of potential side effects is very long and among scarry things includes:

• increased appetite and weight gain
• deposits of fat in chest, face, upper back, and stomach
• water and salt retention which causes swelling and edema
• high blood pressure
• diabetes
• black and blue marks (they destroy blood vessels)
• slowed healing of wounds
• osteoporosis
• cataracts - glaucoma (yess, you can become blind)
• acne
• muscle weakness
• thinning of the skin
• increased susceptibility to infection
• stomach ulcers
• increased sweating
• mood swings
• psychological problems f.E. depression
• adrenal suppression and crisis
• they gradually kill immune system, etc,etc.

Corticosteroids may lower your resistance to infections. Also, any infection you get may be more difficult to treat.

A partial list of the possible problems contains the following: glaucoma, cataracts, gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcers, pancreatitis, aseptic bone necrosis, osteoporosis, myopathies, obesity, edemas, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetic metabolism (blood sugar changes), sleep disturbances (insomnia), psychiatric syndromes (mood changes), delayed wound healing, atrophy (muscle wasting), potassium loss, and fragility of the skin. (

 With prolonged use, the drug halts the communication between the pituitary gland and the adrenals. It can impair the response to stress for up to one to two years following the cessation of the drug.

I hope that up till know you got the point why natural healers are shocked when they hear that someone is on corticosteoids, and why we refuse to heal people while they are on them (we just cannot do anything, untill person stops using them (gradually!!!)

Recovery after corticosteroids can be up till 2 years long.
