What are cr2032 lithium batteries

The most common type of battery used in the PDA's, watches, calculators as well as cameras and binoculars is the cr2032 lithium battery.

You would have used this numerous times but have you ever wondered what does this cr 2033 mean. And why lithium batteries only? The other most common types of batteries are the alkaline batteries and the Nickel cadmium batteries.

CR2032 what does it mean?

There is an electrochemical system system for the naming of the batteries in place which specifies that such batteries have to have an alphanumeric notation and then the actual size.

C - Stands for the manganese dioxide. In these batteries the negative electrode is lithium and hence the lithium batteries. The other most commonly used alphabets are the L (Manganese dioxide) and S (Silver

oxide)

R - Stands for round shape of the batteries

Now for the numerical definition

2032 - This will mean 20mm in diameter and 32 will mean 3.2 mm height

The other most common batteries that are used are the SR range of batteries.

Since the size of the batteries is small these batteries are also called as the button size batteries.

Why use lithium batteries?

Lithium batteries use lithium metal or lithium compound as an anode or the negative electrode. Manganese dioxide is used as the cathode. The cathode and the anode are separated by an organic solvent. These lithium batteries are very much more powerful than the normal alkaline batteries because of the fact that these have longer life and also produce more voltage.

The disadvantage of these batteries is that these can definitely produce amazing charge thereby the risk of fire and overheating is always there.

Always store these batteries in a proper pack.

Brands

The most common brands of the cr2032v lithium battery are Energizer, Maxell, Panasonic, Sony and Duracell.

Most drug stores sell these for about 4 dollars each. However if you do search online then you can easily find a pack of five for about the same price.

The common voltage for these batteries is 3V. The shelf life of these batteries is about 10 years. In the last few years there has been a lot of incident so battery fire in the lithium ion batteries that were being used in the laptops. This is generally not the case with the cr2032 batteries however that is not too say that these do not get overheated.

After excessive use these do get overheated.
