I feel like a craigslist original.  Living in San Francisco from 1999 to 2006, I knew about craigslist long before most others.  In fact, it seemed like a much better idea when it was basically only a San Francisco thing.  Craig apparently hung out at this cafe in Cole Valley, not far from the craigslist office in the Sunset District, and just liked the fact that he was 'Craig.'  But now, you can post a an on craiglists Beirut.  But I digress.

I'll never forget the day I walked pasted the craigslist office and did a double take.  I had no idea it was a run-of-the-mill Victorian in the middle of the increasingly hip part of the Sunset.  Very cool.  And it's still there.

Part of craigslist charm is that it feels largely unregulated.  It's shabby.  It's messy.  Anything goes.  Or at least anything went.  Craigslist has been forced to change in some areas.  For example, the Erotic Services category is not nearly as entertaining as it once was.  Local police departments put some heat on craigslist as escorts were using the board as place to advertise their services.  It's still raunchy, but not in the same way.

I have made some money thanks to craigslist by picking up a writing job here or there.  One has actually turned into a 'long term relationship,' a platonic, working one that is.  But the Writing Gigs section is starting to annoy me.  Craig has to do something about this.  And these criticisms are becoming more and more relevant in the other employment areas on CL.

Overall, it seems that craigslist is allowing people to post gigs, and in some cases, albeit it's more rare, actual jobs that are not really true jobs at all.  Often, people post a gig or a job... but call it an 'internship.'  Usually an unpaid one.  Two years ago, it would have been a job paying something halfway decent.  Today, it's an internship.  I know the world is in an economic crisis, but I think it's also used an excuse to not pay people for doing work.  Craig needs to rebuke these ads.

Also, people, especially in posting writing gigs are just blatantly saying, here's what I need done, it's pretty extensive, and oh by the way, I'm can't pay you.  Or better yet, compensation is deferred.  Or it's based on standard Internet variables.  I write grants for a living these days... and often on craigslist people who want you to write a grant won't pay you, but they will offer you 'a percentage of any funds received.'  Bogus!!

These rants might not really even be criticisms of craigslist.  Maybe they are just merely a sign of the times.  But, all I am saying is that this is where I am noticing these pet peeves and it's really dragging down my craigslist experience.

This is indeed a rant, and I must add said with a very critical eye! I've heard of craigslist but never ventured. And now I have more reasons no, too. Besides, why fix if ain't broke? thanks for sharing :D

I think it is a sign of the times, composed. Sad, but seemingly inevitable. I enjoyed reading this hub, (love the picture of the Craig's List office, thanks for putting it up here,) keep up the great work! Welcome to Hub Pages.

I couldn't agree with you more. Most "freelance" opportunities are now "pay when our revunue comes in." Good Hub.

Craiglist did lead me to hubpages as I was searching for a job in construction but I was curious to see if writers were making any money out there, most were internship, assitant type gigs or blog for pennies, which I can't sacrifice to do.

I still check it out for jobs but its not like it was last year at this time.

Good thoughts...

I, too, found HubPages on CL. And I have found legitimate work, but I could see CL deteriorating down the road.

And yes, Nicole, it was weird the first time I walked by the CL building having had no idea that's where they were. I imagined them in a small office in a downtown skyscraper!

Interesting I never knew that Craig's list was in that type of a building I pictured them to be in a corporate environment. I have to agree with you on the writing gigs as they are shady and Craig's List is becoming an absolute mess, thanks for writing on this topic and giving us insight to another world. :)

Hello Composed. I love your avatar! What city is that? NYC? LA? Anyway, to borrow from your hub above... I digress:-).

Craigslist. Hmm. I guess it suffers from the same traps as any non-regulated online buying/selling forum. I had one positive purchasing experience. I am another one who found Hub Pages on Craigslist.

But there are a LOT of scammers on CL. My teen son came very, very close to wiring $ to some guy ostensibly in the UK to buy an Acura. Luckily my son brought the situation to my attention BEFORE sending the $. Turned out the seller is part of a ring of scammers in Romania or somewhere. Now when my son gets bored he finds similar scams -- yes, they are still doing the same thing -- and toys with them until he makes them mad:-).

Next time I am in SF I will have to visit the CL office.

Well, I took it from up in Echo Park, which is a neighborhood adjacent to Downtown, so I oughta know :-> I say with a smirk!  And I live just a short way from there.

It's a misperception that LA is totally smoggy and stuff.  The City of LA proper - like from Downtown to Hollywood or so is pretty nice.  All of the gunk gets pushed out to the crappy parts of Southern CA like Riverside and the Valley...

Saw your hub on Obesity... I have written on that in the past as an academic... might do a hub playing off of yours! It was really good.
