Jana, I'm so sorry to hear that. My heart sank when I read your message, it's such an awful feeling. It makes me so angry to think that Ann Clare Collings has just done the same thing to you. Have you reported it? Did you transfer money via Western Union too?

Funny that she changed the name of the mother...I was told her mother's name was Tara Collings. Did they send you a copy of the mother's ID? Bet it's the same person as what I got, simply with the new name photoshopped on there.

In my case I spoke to the police here in Australia and over there in London, and neither wanted to help. They see it as such a small insignificant crime that they do nothing, but I don't think they have any understanding of just how widespread it is. I played along with Ann for 3 weeks when she asked for another $2K in the hope to nab her when she rocked up to Western Union to collect the money that I would have pretended to transfer. Police didn't want a bar of it, they said it was entrapment. If only the police would start to listen to the little guy and do something! They could head over to Lagos, Nigeria (where the majority of the Craigslist Paris scams are coming from) and arrest them all. Once you've got one, the rest follow!

In terms of getting the message out there, I suggest posting warnings on Craigslist. You have to conceal it though in an ad for an apartment or room...make it as appealing as possible e.g 340/Month - Magnificent place overlooking the Eiffel Tower, and then when people click on it they can read your warning.

Also check out http://parishousingscamwatch.wordpress.com - it's a blog that was set-up by a nice girl who helped me out with my fraud situation. I'm now co-author of it so when I have a minute I will post your message if you want?

If you do decide to post warnings on Craigslist, feel free to include the blog URL, it will drive a lot more traffic there and really help to spread the word.

Mike.D - that's the same person/group of people that got me!! They used a mother/daughter story with the address being 42 Salter Fort Road (I looked it up and it doesn't even exist - there's a Salter Road, a Fort Road and a Salterford Road but NO Salter Fort Road in London!!). It's INFURIATING! It makes me so angry that they are continuing to do this and the police just turn a blind eye.

I suggest also posting some warnings on Craigslist (though you have to conceal a warning in an ad, putting warning/alert/scams in the title won't ever be put up by Craigslist), this always gets out to a lot of people who could potentially be scammed. Direct them to the URL above if you like and then they will know who to avoid and how to protect themselves.

I have been looking for a room/apartment for my son in Sweden and 100% of the replies I have had are scams. Usually if you google bathrooms or kitchens, you will find the same photos - usually of hotel rooms. Or they put in a luxurious kitchen with shabby old fashioned bedrooms that don't match.

One women even sent me a USA passport and USA License saying she was born and raised in California - yet she could not spell at all.

Once they had my email, I started getting 20 emails a day. They are desperate and it is very hard to keep positive about sending a son across the other side of the world...

I encountered the same scam in easyroomate.com singapore site. The person who contacted me is called Mary Christina McQuillan and she claims to be a british national. Before I could even visit the apartment, she asked me to sign contract and send money to her mother. This is when I did a check on her name and found this site.

I am like a woman possessed now, every time I see them on craigs list I copy the add and when people open it, I am there yelling BEWARE THIS ADD BELOW IS A SCAM. So am helping a few at the moment find apartments in Sweden (from the USA)

Anna - don't be fooled by passports. When they ask for your details, they steal your identity. I have seen about 10 fake passports (some pretty good) fake US drivers licenses, and work ID's. They are all fake.

Hope you didn't lose any money. We just have to keep posting their names and hoping to save as many people as we can.

These fraudsters have so many different email addresses, phone numbers, etc. SHE DOES NOT have an apartment, she just wants to take your money and run! I'm so angry about this - although the email, the city, the story, the style of writing and the names are all different to the one that got me, it's the same person/group of people - they requested payment be sent to the "mother" at the exact same address in London. This address DOES NOT exist - there is a Salter Road in London, a Fort Road, a Salterford Road but NO Salter Fort Road!! All accompanying documents that testify to this have been doctored (even down to the reference numbers in the fine print).

BEWARE!!!! This person operates under the aliases of Ann Clare Collings, Tara Collings, Hilton Kurth, Rebecca Dagg, Juliet Dagg, Genevieve Booysen and Rita Booysen (and these are just the ones we know of).

I DID (Though I felt that smth is wrong)

Than he asked me transfer him by WESTERN UNION money (to reserve a flat)but to the name of his lawer)I DIDNT

Also he send me a contract which I shoud have signed "as soon as possible". His own signature(and signature of lawer(that looked almost the same)) was really wierd and strange

Then when I refused to send him money and contract he asked me to send money to MYSELF in oder to collect them and to give him immidiately in his presence.

I just answerd him No and told that I gave the contract to my Lawer - to check it.

His last message really reminded a druguser, but not "a busy man who hates time wasters"

I did a really big mistake that I send him my personal info. Do you think that he can use it in future?But my biggest mistake - I sent him a copy of my transfer of money to uni (as a payment for my studies)( as a confirmation that I CAN pay). So now he has my account number, my photos and everything.... HOW CAN HE USE IT?

When they got me, all they had was my email address. From that they were able to access my computer, my bank accounts, my stockbroking accounts and copies of my passport I keep on there. You should ring the police and notify them and ask what you should do. One of the things they do with passports is use them to trick other people. To make themselves look honest, they will use your name and send a copy of your passort to someone so they have proof of who they are sending money too. You will end up with a lot of police complaints against you that people will lodge as they will think it was you after seeing your passport.

Definately report it to the police so it is on record that someone has stolen your information - that way if they use it you are covered.

I am replying to the person that first put this guys email address up and to warn others...I did not get scammed by him, but could easily have been.  This is someone to watch for.  All his emails were quite similar to the ones that were listed on this hub.  It was for an apartment in Rome.  "Rev. Veronic - I'm in the same boat. The girl/guy/gang that scammed me has a scan of my passport. I told the police here and they didn't care. I have however spoken to a credit agency who will pay close attention to my credit status and notify me immediately if anyone applies for a loan/credit using my ID. I would certainly report it to your local police (but sadly more often than not they don't do a thing) but definitely look into a place that can put your credit status on high alert. On the upside, so glad you didn't get scammed!!

Stefano - I haven't personally come across Darren Fergie but these scammers create new aliases every day. Have you searched the IP address from the email? This will tell you where the email is coming from and I bet that it's a dodgy one. I can help you with the IP search if you need.

Joe - Glad you didn't get caught up in the scam but unfortunately by sending them a scan of your passport they will most likely use your name/identity in scamming people in the future. I'd advise notifying your local police and also keeping a close eye on your credit rating in case they use your identity to try and get a loan or credit of some sort. Usually there is a company that you can contact who will monitor your credit rating for a small fee and contact you should anyone apply for a loan.

To answer your other question, usually the scammers work in groups. Most emails originate in Nigeria but they have other scammers who work in the UK so (a) they can offer a legitimate phone number and (b) they can go and collect the money from Western Union.

Terrible isn't it?

Just make sure you take care. I've just posted instructions on how to search IP addresses. Become familiar with this and search EVERY email you receive. Good luck!

The only thing that saved me was MoneyGram. The guy at the service counter didn't like how it all sounded and called to double check the Reverand's name. They have him on file now.

But I filled out a Rental and Tenency agreement with all our contact information. Haven't sent him our IDs but still he knows where we live and everything else...

Rev Thomas and wife Sara are active again in melbourne. i have had several email correspondence with them and they replied with such speed that i grew suspicious, the flat was also extremely cheap for what it is. they are listing on craigslist. guess they don't know the beauty of what comes up when you google their name.....they are using the same email address of:

and the apartment is on 58 latrobe street, melbourne. as soon as i googled other apartments in the building, of which all have electrice cooktops, but i was told that their apartment has a gas one, that made me quite suspicious as this is a highrise building and gas does not only go to one apartment.

Hi, I've been in communication with 'Harry Lindsay' for the past couple of days regarding the let of a double room at 31 Monument Street, Holborn, London, EC3R 8BT. Although his story and terms of a letting contract seemed plausible, 'Harry' began to look dodge when he said he couldn't meet up with me to discuss the contract face-to-face and hoped that I wouldn't mind! Hmm! After this bizarre twist I searched for his e-mail address on the Internet 'hmmhra@yahoo.com' and I found this forum… O.k., so I know it was a great looking apartment and it was only £400/month for a double room - but do I really think I've been stupid to believe 'Harry’s' story - absolutely not! And that’s where people get scammed - it all seems plausible - until it comes down to the money. These types of forums are the only kind of security (dare I say Policing) that the average web user has. Toto - sorry for the late response. Don't cash that cheque!! It's a scam. What happens is the scammer will send the victim a fake cheque for an amount more than you are advertising a certain item for. They then "realise" that they've sent too much and ask you to send them the difference back to them via Western Union or Money Gram. You do this and then go to cash the cheque and find out it's a fake and are often charged for trying to bank a fraudulent cheque.

Google "fake cheques Nigeria" and see what I mean. Also, here's a link for you to look at:

He states to have good cheap housing in different areas of USA but cannot show them because he 'works' in London. He will ask for Western Union money transfer with UPS acting as a 3rd party. I just wanted to add that these people (at least some of them) are doing the scam the other way as well. We have a legit apartment to rent, and we're getting responses to our craigslist ad from these people. The first one posted as "Derek Wolly" and is using the email address "derek_wolly@live.co.uk". He fits all the profile info you posted above, and also claims to be a member of the Royal Angels Scounting Team.

So if any of you are also renting a place, beware of these postings too!! They want to send you the money in advance to secure the apartment, but the company will send you "too much money" and you have to refund some of it for his moving expenses. I'm sure the company check is no good and then you lose out the real money that you send him... either that, or they ask for your bank account number, and once they have that along with all of your contact information, they've got a lot of your identity. Either way, I'm not going to find out, as they are definitely a scam!

I also ran across the scams when I was looking for an apartment in Geneva, so be careful everywhere! Trust your instincts, see it in person, and be careful when you part with your money!!

I insist, exactly the same e-mail, among others we shared, of course. She could hardly spell and write (although she was supposed to be born in England), many of her mails lacked of a greetings or goodbye expression, just direct to the money stuff... Even I mentioned I didn't want to be fooled and I needed a guarantee and she answered me: "What kind of proof do you need from me now?". Amazing... be very very careful, please!

After this email I managed to have a conversation with mr Jude Freeman in Nigeria who was pressing me to send a deposit TODAY!! When I said I didn't even know if they had any documents to prove so they made sure they sent me a certificate of ownership.

After few others exchange via email and telephone( yes they even called me from Nigeria to my UK mobile number!!) then i have received the last email, after which I got suspicious, googled fraud deposit tenants and I found you and your article which completely saved my life today!

I was scammed out of $4500 dollars when I accepted a position as a "personal assistant". It seems so ridiculous now but they lure you with that quick $500 you think you are making. I think something needs to be done about money orders and transfers. I realize it was my own fault but when bank tellers deposit money orders for customers they should be saying: "Please be advised that this money order may take weeks to clear and if it is found to be counterfeit you will be held responsible for it and therefore you will owe the value of it."

Anyway, my guy was named Michael Munoz, his email was mnunozinc@yahoo.com.

Have wasted a day (but thankfully no money) talking to scammers from Craigslist in my search to find a flat in Paris.

You may want to add these guys to your list. The ones that weren't smart enough to use the untraceable gmail, I all traced back to Nigeria.

The majority offered too good to be true prices on flats, stated they were working abroad on contract work (China and London) and would send the key to me in the post or claimed to be religious people.

Many also specified that tragedies had taken place in their life - the flat belonged to his/her deceased parents etc.

I think that the most important thing when finding a flat here is to come here first. to me it seemed incredible that anyone could fall for these scammers (i have responded to three craigslist posts and had three similar, but poor scams). i suppose that if you are abroad, say in the states, then you will have to arrange things in advance and it would not seem to untoward.

i recomend googling particuliers a particuliers, which is an agency free website that has been useful and trustwrthy in my case. the scammers primarily target websites aimed at americans and expats like craigslist and fusac. i would recommend not using craigslist at all anymore as it seems effectively broken. other recommended websites include seloger, which is a fairly standard lettings website. or type locations and particuliers in french google.

be aware that in my experience things like washing machines and ovens are extremely rare in appartments going for less than 1000euro´s.

on the flipside i have lived in paris for 7 months now in a flat which is central has wifi etc 30m2 and 650 a month. mý girlfriend rents nearby for 550. ironically i rent from a guy who had to move to nigeria for work! but of course i was able to see the flat meet the guy etc.

most important is to spend some time in paris loóking so that you can go to the flat. if you cannot do this then find someone who can on your behalf or use a trusted agent. it will save you money in the long run. good luck! don't let the bastards grind you down

I did a search for this guy's name and this site came up. I knew I'd see his name in one of the comments. I got the same exact email, except the address of the apartment is different. Too bad more people don't check the internet before they dive headlong into these types of things. Just got an email from one Kelvin Motero (same email as Dave has given). Wants to buy my house in Ontario, Canada (which is currently for sale privately) with a certified cheque. I was curious about this guy and found this thread when I Googled his name. Obviously I will not be responding to him. Thought I'd post here since there seems to be a mile long thread going of this guy (and others). He has given info of his supposed workplace and when I checked it online- there is a real website. Wonder which part is falst- the actual agency and website or his supposed employment there?
