Build a Website - Beginners Business Website
83Beginners Website Design
Are you ready to build your first business website and start your online business? In September of 2008 I was a complete beginner and was also looking for the best way to build my own business website, but I was in the same situation as most wannabe internet business start ups:
- I didn't know any HTML.
- I couldn't afford Dreamweaver software.
- I couldn't afford to pay someone to create my site for me.
Despite these obvious negatives I knew it was time to take my business idea seriously and stop playing with the idea of having my own business website. I'd already wasted lots of time with some of the free website options available and gotten nowhere fast with them - so what options were available to a non tech savvy person such as myself?
There are literally thousands of companies out there offering free and paid website building tools but how do you choose the best one?
The solution I finally found after many hours surfing the net, and my recommendation to any beginner, is to use Intuits Homestead Website Building System.
Yes, I'm selling this product - but I'm selling it because I USE IT and I LOVE IT and I can guarantee that you will too.
It's a low cost, but very well designed system, that does everything you will need it to. A system that is easy to use, is fully customizable so that your site can grow with you and your business, and doesn't rely on you needing to know any html, css or php. I can even create your site for you if you don't have the time to create the site yourself.
If you're ready to start your own professional business website quickly and easily with minimal outlay then read on.
What do you want from your business website?
The first thing I would strongly recommend for a website beginner, is to write a list of everything you want from your website. This is the list of needs I created for my business first website:
Spend as little as possible on start up costs
Have my own unique web address www.mysite.com
Have my own unique email address susana@mysite.com
Sell my services
Integrate affliate products to sell via my site
Accept as many forms of payment as possible on my site
Make me a decent enough income
Be able to publish 50+ pages and link them all seemlessly
Have a fully customisable website
Incorporate adsense & other advertising programs to generate revenue
Get hosting included
Get plenty of bandwidth
Do not need to know or understand HTML, CSS or PHP
Be able to add videos and other media easily
Award Winning Website Building System
"A Web site building tool for the technically unsavvy. The drag-and-drop software lets you create a Web presence with minimal pain."
Minimal pain was really the key phrase for me. If you can use MS Word then you can use Homestead's SiteBuilder software it really is that easy.
My Favourite Features:
- Site Statistics - This is by far my favourite feature. Monitor who visits your site, when, where they come from, how long they stay, which pages get the most hits, what search terms brought them to you, what their surfing behavior is - PLUS so much more.
- WYSIWYG Page Editor (What You See Is What You Get) - Create Pages easily using their drag and drop system. Add images, logos, YouTube Videos, music files, text files, links, live chat box, RSS feeds, google search box - PLUS tonnes more!
- Easy Search Engine Optimization - Add keyword tags, page descriptions for search engines and page titles quickly and easily for each page you create on the Page Info Option.
- Customizable Design - change your design and layout as often as you like. Find what works. Copy and paste between pages.
- 5 Email Accounts per Website - all at yourname@yoursite.com, plus create as many mailing lists as you want. (with the GOLD Edition)
- Create up to 100 pages per site - personally I only have around 40 pages which is plenty for my needs.
- Reliable Server - My site has NEVER been down in 11 months of being online
- Create a store front with shopping cart feature- Enter product names, descriptions, images and pricing. Upload everything at once from Excel, QuickBooks or eBay.
- Accept Credit Card & PayPal Payments without fuss - it's a very simple procedure to set up payments for your goods or services.
- Easy to add Adsense Capsules- benefit from 100% of your adsense earnings!
- Prompt email and phone support - I've only needed to use the email support on a couple of occasions because it's all very self explanatory. Each time I have received fully understandable help instructions, from a real person, within a couple of hours.
- Edit your site from anywhere in the world - you can log into your account from any computer and make changes to your website, as well as check your email and view your site statistics.
The Homestead website building system has so many features, that are all so easy to use, that it's hard to fault it. It has everything I wrote down in my "website wish list" plus a great deal more.
I have used their GOLD service ($24 per month) since September of last year and my first website now has over 20,000 page views per month and rising.
Three Pricing & Package Options
Spread the Cost of your Business Website
By paying around $24 a month you can spread the cost of your website over a year, which makes it a far more affordable option for many of us starting out in our own business than coughing up a lump sum.
It's an investment that pays for itself very quickly. By the time your business website has been up and running for a few months and you are getting found by customers, you will easily be recouping your monthly cost either through selling your products or services or through adsense revenue.
$240 dollars per year for a fully functioning website is about as cheap as it gets when you consider that you'd be paying $500 minimum for someone to create just a basic 5 page website for you. (See below if you would like me to do this for you.)
If you're still undecided, remember you can try it FREE for 30 days and if you don't like what you get (which I doubt very much) you can opt out without any hassle at all.

Yep, we all need easy ways to create our websites! Thanks for your comment Pete :)
Interesting article but I would have to disagree with your comments on Wordpress. For creating dynamic as opposed to static sites Wordpress is the way to go. Domain name around $10 from someone like Namecheap.com, hosting from someone like Hostgator for as little as $4.99 per month.
Wordpress is free, infinitely customizable, can easily be made search engine friendly and can be installed with a couple of clicks through your hosting provider if they offer Cpanel/Fantastico. Pick a theme and customize with plugins.
The most recent one I built took less than a day to set up and readers can see it at http://arteccentrixgallery.com for an idea of what can be done nowadays. The learning curve may be a little steeper but you do not need to be a coder to use Wordpress.
This sounds like a good idea. Anybody know about sitespinner or coffeecup softwares.
Hi caymanhost, I've read a lot of your hubs which are great but on this we will have to agree to differ! I did some work with wordpress and I did not find it as easy to use and customisable as Homestead for a business website. I think Wordpress is great if you want a really nice looking blog and/or want to promote a local business, but not sure how good it would be for affliate marketing and selling stuff now. I'm sure it's possible but like I said I would have to pay someone to do it for me and that was not what I was looking for. Thanks for your comment :)
Humble African - No I haven't heard of them, sorry!
Weebly isn't bad for a free site. In fact, I think it has some pretty good features now. I've used the $ 4.99 version of Homestead, too.
Hi Susana,
Thanks for the kind words :-)
I wasn't suggesting WP was easier than Homestead, I did concede that the learning curve was probably a little steeper. Nor was I casting aspersions on Homestead, you actually provide an excellent recommendation in this hub. I just felt that the claim that you need to be a "coder" to build sites with WP was inaccurate. As for affiliate marketing WP can also be very good. There are plenty of good tutorials out there for WP too as it is so widely used.
Different strokes for different folks as they say :-)
Welcome back caymanhost :) I've changed the little bit I wrote about WP because you know a lot more about it than I do and honestly I want my article to be as accurate as possible! So thanks for persevering with me :)
Aww, now I feel rotten! I appreciate entirely that you were just being honest about your own experiences with WP. Honestly though, I'm not a techie or a coder. I learned HTML way back in the day when recovering from surgery and bored enough to do about anything. I wrote my first (horrible) website in Notepad and it was laborious.
Nowadays, CSS and PHP usually have me completely stumped too, my knowledge of both is very sketchy. I guess anything is easy when you've done it yourself, but generally speaking, ease of use nowadays is much better for the non technical (most of the time)as it all goes in under the hood without needing to understand it much. I struggle far more with one of my blogs on NucleusCMS and often have to go to the forums to ask questions of the PHP experts :-) With WP I just go hunting for a plugin and usually find one that will do what I want it to. As to how they all work I have no idea I'm just grateful that cleverer people than I write them and make things easier on me.
Your suggestion for those entirely new to building a site is probably a lot more user friendly and I do applaud you on a very informative hub.
Don't feel bad. I'm glad of honest feedback! If you hadn't pointed it out someone else may of read up to that point in the hub and thought it was a load of hot air and not continued to read. So thank you, thank you, thank you! :)
Have a heart that never hardens, a temper that never tires, a touch that never hurts.
Nice quote!
Great hub! Loads of good info!
My hub on starting a website...
Thanks Susana S for cool information here. Just a tip here. For a free website and easy to use web building tools, people can try www.webs.com. They are free, just watch out for "Clicky" as they charge for that. But there's ways around it.
