Creatine Side Effects

Creatine is one of the most researched supplement in the whole sports nutrition industry. Used by many pro athletes, it has become more and more popular even for "normal" people working out. Today, there are quantities of studies dealing with the potential success and on the other hand the possible creatine side effects.

Actually all studies showed the only side effect that occurred was an increased body weight. Participating people were athletes as well as non-athletic people. The extra weight is primarily based on water which is stored in the muscles.

Because the body produces creatine itself, there were several worries about a longer lasting creatine treatment could reduce the body's own creatine production. But studies showed that the creatine level always became normal after the treatment.

When talking about creatine effects, there is always the fear of affecting the kidneys. Again, other studies showed there is no negative influence. Creatine not needed by the body was excreted and could be found in the urine of the participating probands. Nevertheless, a high water intake is recommended during a creatine treatment.

When using creatine, a significant gain of strength might be noticed. When heavier weights are used one should exercise caution for muscles and joints might not be prepared enough for those weights. So a possible side effect might be an injury due to a too short warm-up period.
