How To Create a Hub

The question has been asked in many ways.

"I'm new and I just wrote my first hub, am I doing it right?"

"I have a hub that has a low score. Is something wrong with it?"

"Can I get some feedback on a hub that's not getting traffic?"

How do I write a hub that will not only be read but will score well? That's the basic question. Quality, original hubs will find an audience. As the views increase, so will the hub's score and in turn, so will the author's score. Of course, there are other factors that contribute to HubScore, but it all starts with the hub.

Step By Step:

You've thought of a great idea for a hub and now you are ready to write? Ok, then, here's how it works step by step.

Step one - Choose a title.

As soon as you click the 'Start a new hub' button, a page will open asking you to complete a few steps. The first part is the title. You want to choose a title that is simple and straightforward and gives the gist of your hub. Try and make sure your title is relevant to whatever the hub is about. If your hub is a guide to planting flowers, try "How To Plant Flowers" You want your title to be interesting and catchy, if possible. To read your hub, people have to be drawn to it and part of the appeal is in the title. Make sure it is spelled right and not misguiding. Titles are important, but should not be stressed over. Just keep it simple. Hub titles can be changed at any time, even after your hub is published.

Step two- URL.

This is the link to your hub. This box will fill in as you type your title and, so long as that URL is not already in use, you can keep whatever pops up there. If the address is in use, HubPages will alert you of the fact, and you will need to change it. You can choose any address you want as long as it pertains to your hub and is available. Once your hub is published, the URL CAN NOT be changed. Each hub has its own unique URL. If you want, you can keep all your URL's similar. For example, all of your hubs can end in 'myhub1' 'myhub2' instead of the title of each individual hub.

Step three - Category.

This is where you look through a menu of options and decide which area your hub best fits. Is it a health topic? About children or babies? A hub that is just for fun? Whatever you think is the best placement, go with it. Sometimes a hub doesn't seem to fit quite right into any category. Just make your best guess. Category can be changed at any time, even after your hub is published.

Step four - Layout.

Just click on one of the boxes provided to start with a basic template for your hub. This is just a template and can be changed once you start writing. You can add or delete capsules all you want while creating your hub. You do not have to stick to the layout you choose here. It is just a guide to help you out.

Step five- Tags.

Pick at least two tags to go on to the next step. The tags are the keywords associated with your hub that will allow others to search for your topic. You want to keep the tags relevant to your hub and a good number of tags is around 15 to 20. Of course, you can have as many or as few as you like. Tags can be added or deleted any time, even after publishing.

After these steps are complete, make sure your hub is compliant with HubPages rules and move on to the writing process.

Creating the hub

Now you will be at the hub writing page. The layout you chose in the previous steps, will be writing for you. If you choose to add more capsules, click the capsule you wish to add on the right and it will be added to the bottom of the page. You can reorder the capsules in the space on the right by moving the tabs and clicking the 'reorder now' button, or you can move them using the little green arrows on the capsule itself. The 'up' and 'down' arrows will move the section higher or lower and the 'side to side' arrows will make the capsule scootch to one side, allowing you to place a picture, link, text or whatever kind of capsule next to it. You can add or delete the capsules throughout this process.

The way you choose to order your capsules is up to you. You can see how other hubbers layout their hubs and try to follow the same pattern. The general rule of thumb is that comments are at the bottom and Amazon or Ebay links are not at the beginning. The best way to see how to layout your hub is by reading others' hubs. That will give you an idea of what is typically expected. Make sure you include a comments section at the bottom so readers can leave comments for you and delete any unused capsules.

Pictures, videos, links, and news feeds are helpful in making a hub entertaining. Separating your text into morethan one text box helps break up a long section of text and is more appealing to a reader. Also, if you do not include pictures, your hub will not be as appealing to potential readers. Most want to see a picture relevant to the hub next to the title.

You can add as many or as few pictures or video as you like. However, you want the majority of your hub to be original text.

Time to publish

When you are all finished filling your capsules and are happy with the layout of your hub, preview it. Get an idea of what your hub will look like once it is published. If something doesn't look right or you forgot to add or delete something, you can do so before publishing.

Don't forget to proofread and spellcheck! Everyone has spelling and/or grammatical errors from time to time, but too many can be distracting. Make sure your hub looks good and is pleasing to the eye.

Once everything is taken care of, it's time to publish. If you are not finished with your hub but need to walk away from it, you can save unpublished and go back to it later from the 'my account' section. This is where you will find all of your hubs, published or not and where you can navigate through them. To edit a hub, click the edit button to the left of the title. Once published, a hub can be changed. You can still go back later and add more to it, fix mistakes or change the title. Once your hub is published, it is available for others to read and enjoy.

As with anything else in life, the best way to learn how to write a hub is by writing one, or better yet, several. Check out others' hubs and write a few yourself and before you know it, you'll be hubbing like a pro!

Janette - Good stuff. I remember my first hub. I was fingers and thumbs - despite reading through the 'how-to' stuff. No change after three weeks ... ;)

Like the new hairstyle BTW - sexy!

This should go in the "help" section. I wrestle with Titles the most, and have gone back and changed them on a few.

FD is right, the new you is stunning!

A lot of people have issues learning to utilize capsules well, I think this is the first major challenge to creating a good Hub.

I agree Ix--a lot tend to make one long text hub and don't break it up or forget pictures.
