Creating Your Own Homeschool Curriculum
68You can create your own curriculum if you do a little research. Of course, this is going to take some time but the advantages of doing this far outweigh the inconvenience for a lot of people.
One of the biggest advantages to creating your own curriculum, which is something that you will not have available to you if you purchase a pre-packaged curriculum, is that you can change things around quite easily. This is something that a lot of parents really like because it means that if you find a better resource for a subject, then you can quite easily implement the new resource without any worries.
Another great advantage to creating your own homeschool curriculum is that you can study different subjects in depth. You are not forced to study what the curriculum tells you to study either. Instead you can choose what topic you want to study and then you can also choose what important facts your child is ready to learn about that topic, based upon their age and interest level.
Now if you are interested in discovering what this type of curriculum is like, here is what you are going to need to know...
The first thing that you are going to want to do is pick out your literature selections for the semester. Herein it is important to establish a goal for your children. For instance, your goal may be for each of your children to read between 5 and 7 books within a specified matter of time. Remember though that you do need to be realistic whenever you are setting these goals. After all, you do not want your child to feel as though they are under a great deal of pressure.
From this literature goal you can then establish goals for both your vocabulary and spelling lessons. This can be easily done by incorporating both of these things into your literature studies. For instance, you could insist that your child look up any words that they encounter and do not know the correct definition of. This is actually a great way for your child to build their vocabulary. You could even give your child a notebook to write the words and definitions in so that they can then create their own spelling list for the week.
It is also possible for you to incorporate your history lesson into your literature lesson as well. You simply need to study the time period of the literature selections for history. Children can then research the important people and places of that time period. This will then let you know what the important scientific discoveries are for your science lessons.
Of course, you can also use standard worksheets whenever you want to do so. However, many parents choose not to use these things. Instead they prefer to turn such things as their math lessons into something that is more interesting. One way to do that with math is by building something or by trying to figure out what the percentage of allowance a child gets to keep is.
As you can see, the key here is to spend some time discovering what your child's interests are. You will then just need to adjust your curriculum so that it can fit your child's needs.
