Many people are clueless when it comes to making use of their credit cards. It's more than just purchasing every little thing with credit and forgetting that if you don't pay it off you're going to pay three times the actual price of that item once interest and fees are added - there are some steps that you can take to let your credit card work for you instead of against you. Here are some tips for letting your card work with you:

Choose the Right Credit Card

It all starts with getting the right card in your pocket to begin with. It should fit your lifestyle and what you purchase. Use online credit websites to compare credit card features side by side to find the one that offers what you'll actually use. Don't pay for benefits or features that you won't take advantage of!

Communicate with the Credit Card Company

If you have concerns with your credit card account, including rate changes or due date changes - don't be afraid to call them and ask to speak to a manager to get to the bottom of it. Get the names of everyone you spoke to, keep accurate notes or record your call. You never know when you might need that as proof or support for a case in the future!

Use the Credit Card Wisely

If you already have credit cards with high interest and outstanding balances, take time to look for a 0 apr balance transfer offer. When you move your balance from a high interest card to a lower interest card, more of your payment will go toward the principal and you'll be able to pay it off faster.

Watch for Card and Rate Changes

Right now, credit card companies can pretty much make any change they want to your current payment agreement or interest rates. This will stop in July 2010 (if not sooner, if President Obama's credit card reforms get pushed through sooner), but until then, keep an eye on all mail arriving in your mailbox or email from your credit card company as they may be letting you know that your interest rate has been increased or your credit limit lowered. Sometimes you will find an opt-out feature that will allow you to cease using the card and pay off the existing balance under the previous terms (but at least you will not be paying higher interest on your existing balance).

Choose Rewards That You'll Actually Use

There are so many different rewards programs available and they all look good on paper. But choose a card with rewards that you'll really use. If you don't fly anywhere, you don't need a credit card with airline miles (unless you can redeem them in other ways, as well). Look for ways to improve your finances through better use of your credit cards. That way, you're credit cards work for you rather than instead of against you!
