There is nothing like the joy of brining home your new dachshunds puppies, but is your home ready for your pups? Sometimes we become so excited about our new pets we forget about the little important details, such as making sure our home is safe for our soon-to-be canine family members. Thus, although you may feel you have done everything to prepare for your new dogs, you should consider the following:

Do you have any plants that are toxic to dogs? Many household plants and flowers are poisonous to dogs, such as Poinsettia, Taro Vine, Lilies, and many others. You need to find out what plants are bad, and make sure that if these plants are in your home, they are placed where your dachshunds puppies cannot reach.

Do you have stairs and many high places where your dog will feel tempted to jump? Your pooches will want to be with you wherever you go. If you sit on a couch, are constantly up and down the stairs, on your bed, etc., your dogs will want to be right beside you. While this is not a problem for most breeds, dachshunds are different because of the way they are shaped. The long torso and short legs of the dachshund, while ideal for hunting badgers and burrowing down into their holes, is not idyllic for jumping. Thus, they can suffer back injuries easily if you are not careful.

Therefore, you need to make sure you pick up your dachshunds puppies whenever you can if you allow them on your furniture. You can also provide them with a special ramp that is made for small dogs, so they don't have to jump.

Keep hazardous materials out of their reach. Any chemical products, such as bathroom cleaners, detergents, medication, etc., as well as wires or cables, need to be kept out of your puppies' reach. Make sure any dangerous products are stored high, behind closed doors, or locked cupboards. Wires should be concealed behind appliances, desks, etc. so they are not in plain sight, which may tempt your dogs when they are in a chewing mood.

Consider a crate - Dogs are den animals, and the perfect size crates makes a wonderful den where the dog can relax and be kept safe when you are away from home, or would like a little peace and quiet.

Your home can be a potential hazard to dachshunds puppies, so make sure you do everything you can to ensure they are kept safe, happy, and healthy to give yourself peace of mind.
