Just the Basics

Basically, addressing and dealing with high gas price does not necessarily mean you take costly measures beyond what is natural and normal. This means when gas prices were lower, there were a lot of things you did not mind or attend to, like:

Driving habits that uses more fuel when:

  • suddenly accelerating and braking

  • running engine and air-con is on while waiting for someone or parked
  • revving the engine for no reason or before turning it off

  • warming up the engine before driving off

Car Condition:

  • make sure entire ignition system works properly
  • fuel delivery, either carburettion or injection, is in top condition - fuel filters must be cleaned or replaced when necessary
  • air filters must be clean so correct air and fuel mixture is achieved

  • correct or recommended tire pressures in specified road conditions
  • if possible or affordable, keep gasoline tanks topped off to minimize evaporation
  • transmission must be in top shape so engine is not forced to work harder than necessary
  • exhaust system must not have leaks or be noisy as driving could be different from normal or ideal way
  • the engine must be in the best shape, no blow-bys, loose compression, oil or coolant leaks - if possible let it undergo a reliable engine analysis or test
  • the battery and charging system should be in good condition so you do not keep revving to make sure of charging it

Others:

  • short drives will mean engine is not in operating temperature, so demand for fuel will be more, compared to longer drives that bring the car to operating temperature
  • relieve the car from unnecessary weight or load - the heavier the car is the more fuel it needs to work the engine
  • plan your trip, if not, make sure you can make maximum use of the car in every trip or drive
  • short-cuts could mean more traffic - that's fuel used without getting anywhere
  • allow for more time to avoid rushing
  • park car in cool shaded areas to minimize evaporation
  • if parking spot is not sure to wherever you're going, opt for other cheaper means of conveyance
  • learn on how calculate how many miles or kilometers per gallon or liter your car consumes - this helps on how you could drive your car economically
