Sales and Marketing are 2 Different Things
People oftentimes get it confused. Look at it like this:
MARKETING: done properly, is an ongoing process... it's never-ending, taking on different forms and stages as needed.
SALES (or selling): Is the act of "sealing the deal". It's that one-on-one communication & transaction period that arrives IF you've played your marketing cards right.
Ever heard the saying "You can lead a horse to the water but you can't make him drink"?
well Marketing is the leading the horse to the water part
and Sales is the drink!
...and if you've done your marketing effectively, then you won't have to MAKE your prospect drink -- They will WANT to drink because they have realized through your marketing that you have the best drinking water in the land!
Definition for Marketing -- A Scenario Example: Let's say you're an Affiliate 'Marketer', then your job is just that - 'Marketing' - not selling - 'Marketing'! The company that you market for does the selling part. Your job is just to PREsell your visitor and forward them to your merchant in a warm open-to-buy mood. Now it's time for the merchant to take it from there and seal the deal. This great sales opportunity arrived for the company because your marketing skills were on point! And IF the company exemplifies all the nice things that you've bragged on them about And More! ~~ then chances are High your prospect will Buy:-)
Stop At Your Own Risk!
Stop Marketing and watch your business shrink. Sure you can stop once you've made a sale BUT is that all you want??? Remember: Competition is all around you, and what you won't do they'd be happy to! Just like in a relationship..."the things you did to get that person, are the things you need to do to keep them". If you don't, your competition will steal them away faster than you got them.
That's why After-Sale Marketing is crucial IF you want to build a customer and benefit from long-term revenue, instead of just making a single sale. If a customer is what you want to cultivate, then at this point your marketing efforts will enter a whole new phase. Now your marketing is more follow-up, customer service, customer retention, VIP customer rewards, customer appreciation days, etc. See what I mean? The marketing process should be ongoing ~ Infinite! Marketing sets the stage for E V E R Y T H I N G.
Note: As far as affiliate marketing goes, lucky for you, this after-sale marketing is usually handled by the company you're marketing for -unless you've built a list for further contact with your customers (like many successful marketers do). Although not extremely common, it is best to affiliate yourself with companies that compensate you for additional sales for the life of the customer. It is rare to find AP's like this, but when you do It Is A *Gem!*
Creating Marketing Momentum
In order to create marketing momentum you should have at least 5 strong marketing strategies working together at all times. For Example: You might have viral marketing, email campaign, search engine optimization, article writing and free/paid advertising going on at the same time. This means that you're "Out There" from all angles.
Your prospect might search on Google and your listing grabs their attention -- then they might glance over and see you in the sponsor ads -- then they might be in their favorite social network and hear about you from a friend -- then they might be relaxing and catch your article featured on their favorite website -- then they might see a post by or about you in their favorite forum ... Do you see what's happening here?
That Marketing momeNTUM is building up inside of them, each time driving home the message "This is the one to do business with" ~ "WoW I keep hearing about them, they must be the sh#!" ~ "This is the one to do business with" ~ "WoW I keep hearing about them, they must be the sh#!" ~ "This is the one to do business with" ~ "WoW I keep hearing about them, they must be the sh#!" --- 'Til FINALLY they break down and are convinced to buy from WHO? ==> YOU!-)
---
Final Note: Marketing should always be one-to-one communication, it is not the time to be general. Throughout your marketing you are always communicating with just one person, your ideal target prospect. This personalizes your marketing and makes your prospect feel that what you have is specifically designed for them, which it truly is! This one personalized factor can really enhance your results. The publication above 'Make Your Content PREsell!' will cover this in-depth (as well as many other helpful tips to eleVATE your marketing success!)
