This hub” concepts of depression in the old people” is an article written sequel to my two earlier hubs “causes of depression”.
This hub will highlight everything about depression in the old people.
Most old people have passed through cycles of life changes and they are the ones with a high probability of having depression.
Depression in the old people is due to several factors which are summarized below.
1) Health disabilities- This includes sense pain, chronic pain, heart disease or body disabilities.
2) Loss of someone so close- This includes family members, friends, and marriage partners e.t.c.
3) Fears- financial problems, fear of the unknown.
4) Stunted value of purpose- Depression is caused by stunted value of purpose which includes loss of identity e.t.c. This may arise due to retirement e.t.c.
While knowing fully well that depression has a high tendency of occurrence in old people. Some noticeable symptoms of depression in old people include.
a) Sadness- This is the primary signs of depression in most old people.
b) Loss of interest in pleasurable past activities.
c) Loss of appetite and weight loss is also a noticed symptom of depression.
d) Suicidal thoughts and feelings of death surround most old people experiencing depression.
e) Abnormal sleeping attitude- An old fellow passing though depression will either be oversleeping, ability to have sound sleep e.t.c.
f) Solitude and withdrawal from social gatherings
g) They do experience helplessness
i) Anxiety and worries.
Cure of depression in old people
Before suggesting any cure to depression, it’s pertinent for such old people to undergo medical evaluation. A known understanding of medical conditions that may cause depression should be taken note of. This includes: Heart attack, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis e.t.c.
On knowing these factors, you can then start using antidepressant medications, and going also for medical or expert’s consultation on depression related issues.
