Despite the risk of some pets developing complications, diabetes can be treated and most diabetic dogs do well and are able to lead longer healthier lives. If your pet has diabetes a special diet may be required for you to ensure your dog's good health. Your vet will be able to advice you on the best diet for your dog and may suggest particular foods.

In general, dogs may be fed dry and/or canned foods. Semi-moist foods are best avoided because they contain simple sugars. You can improve glucose control by using higher fiber, lower calorie diets, i.e. "light" diets. Ask your veterinarian for more information and recommendations. If your pet eats all his or her food quickly, feeding 50% of the food at the time of each insulin shot is recommended by most vets. To ensure that your pet is eating, it is best to offer the food just before giving or administering the insulin.

So if your dog has diabetes, it is best to consult your vet about your diabetic dog food options. They will be able to recommend the foods for your particular dog and advice you on some dos and don'ts that apply to your particular situation and your pet.

Exercise is important for your pet. Many dogs, especially older ones, tend to be overweight or obese. Too much storage of fat in body cells can lead to insulin resistance in your pet or dog. Exercising your dog regularly combined with dietary management (i.e. diabetic dog food) can help your pet to attain and maintain an optimal weight and health. Taking your dog for daily walks is good for your pet and for you as well. Experts recommend that you do this regularly for it to work.

Choose a healthy diet for your pet. Good nutrition is a very important part of your dog's diabetes management and control. You should work with your vet to develop an eating plan that meets your pet's nutritional and health needs while keeping blood glucose in a healthy range. By choosing nutritious foods and balancing what and how much you pet eats with activity level, blood sugar levels can be kept as close to normal as possible. Good control of your dog's diabetes will help your dog to lead a longer and healthier life.
