Whether you spend a lot of time entertaining guests in your home or if you only entertain on special occasions, you need to have a variety of drink glasses so that you have the perfect glass for serving different kinds of drinks. The following is a list of commonly used glasses for drinks.

· Collins glass. This is one of the ordinary drink glasses that you usually have in your cupboard or hutch. It is usually tall and can be used for a mixed alcoholic drink or a simple glass of water. It usually holds between 8 and 12 fluid ounces.

· Highball glass. This drinking glass is not quite as tall as the Collins glass and is rounder. It still holds between 8 and 12 fluid ounces of liquid, whether it is an alcoholic beverage or an ordinary drink of pop, juice or water.

· Old-Fashioned drinking glass. This is a low tumbler that can be used for serving a wide variety of cocktails. Some of these glasses can hold up to 12 ounces, but usually they can hold 8 ounces or less.

· Pony glass. This is a small drink glass that will only hold a portion of a bottle of beer. The name comes from the old horse races where the onlookers sometimes went to the bar for a small drink between races.

· Pilsner glass. This is a long slender glass often used to serve some types of beer.

· Beer stein. This is a mug, rather than a glass that will hold a full bottle of beer. There is a handle for easy holding so that your hands won’t get wet from the condensation that forms on the outside of the glass from the cold beer.

· Beer Glass. This glass used for serving beer is larger than the regular drink glass. There are several forms of this glass, but the typical one used is the pint glass so that it holds a full pint. It is narrower at the bottom than at the top and are usually six inches tall, with the diameter of the mouth of the glass being a full inch more than that of the bottom.

· Wheat beer glass. This beer drink glass is generally used for serving German beer or beer that foams on the top. The glass is tall enough to hold 0.5 litres of beer and still have room for the foam.

For serving wine and cocktails, the drink glasses used are often referred to as stemware. They all have a long stem that you hold to drink the liquid inside so that the temperature of your hand on the bowl of the glass won’t warm or affect the temperature of the drink. These include:

· Champagne flute glasses. This type of drink glass has a long stem and a long narrow bowl.

· Cocktail glass. This is often called a martini glass. The bowl is triangular in shape so that it almost forms a right angle from the tip of the cone to the cross section of the bowl.

· Sherry glass. This drink glass has a stem for holding but the bowl of the glass is rounder and larger than the typical types of stemware. The standard size is one that holds about 4 ounces of sherry or wine.

· Snifter. This is a balloon shape wine glass in which the bowl is narrower at the top than at the bottom. It is mostly used for serving brandy.

When you set out to buy the drink glasses you need so that you have a glass for every occasion, you can use this list as a guide to help you have at least four of each one. You will need to have more of the ordinary type of drinking glasses than any other because you will use these on a daily basis.
