1. Use the Scene Modes: Do you have a camera manual? If so, just take that and read it twice, particularly understand the different scene modes such as "Portrait", "Close-up", "Landscape, "Night mode" etc. Understand when to use them and always choose an appropriate scene mode before you shoot pictures.

This simple tip has always had produced stunning photos for me, and my friends have wondered how I could get such bright, crisp photos. Especially, the point and shoot cameras are great for shooting "Portrait" pictures (people shots), and "Close-up" pictures (flowers etc).

2. Rest your Camera: Buy a $30 tripod. It is worth it. Even if you don't want to spend money on a tripod, whenever you want to shoot pictures, rest the camera on a table or a park bench and try shooting with Night mode (even in the daylight!).

The resulting photographs will be more brighter as the light entering the camera lens would be more than usual. The images would be crisp with no grains or blurs.

3. Auto-Shoot for Night Pictures: If you want to shoot pictures in night. Use rest on a sturdy place and use "Auto-timer" mode. Even while clicking, you may ruin the picture with your action. So, use "Auto-timer" mode with 10 seconds or whatever delay your camera comes up with.

Try switching off the flash as it will eliminate the harsh, lighting and avoid red-eye problems.

4. Get Closer: Great photographs are all about compositions. Newbies often tend to make the mistake of not getting closer to the subject. Go closer to the subject. As I had already told, point and shoot cameras are great for shooting "close-up" shots so, use the "Macro" (the little flower symbol button) mode.

Even, if taking pictures of people, narrow down to their face - do not afraid to cut the top of the head (while framing). If you look at the fashion magazines, you will see the faces are tightly cropped that would give a pro look.

5. Learn Photo Editing Tips: The advantage with Digital Cameras are that since the camera records the light reflections in a digital file, it is very easy to increase or decrease brightness on your computer. Many of the ordinary photographs can be greatly improved with few minor adjustments in an photo editing software such as Google Picasa. But, learn a good photo editing tool such as GIMP or Adobe Photoshop and you can produce dramatic pictures.
