Disturbia - A twist on Rear Window

Make no mistake about it, I am not from the Alfred Hitchcock generation. I don’t know what it is, but I just cannot get into those movies. I know they’re classics and I’m sure they’re fine and dandy, but they just bore the everloving snot out of me. And I’m not an action buff, either. I love slow, suspenseful dramas, which Hitchcock is famous for. Still, I can’t get into his movies.

However, I love Rear Window.

Despite my distaste for movies from that era, I’m a big fan of Jimmy Stewart. I don’t know what it is, but he just strikes me as the true hero type; the kind you could always get behind and feel safe. Now, throw him in one of Hitchcock’s best films, and you’ve got something I can come on board with.

Rear Window tells the story of a professional photographer that is temporarily confined to his apartment after an accident leaves him in a wheelchair with his leg in a cast. With nothing else to do, he starts spying on his neighbors. Eventually, he sees some events that lead him to believe one of his neighbors might’ve committed a murder and he’s got to convince everyone that he isn’t seeing things.

Now, Rear Window has been referenced many times, including a remake in 1998 starring Christopher Reeve. In 2007, it sees another incarnation in Disturbia.

In Disturbia, Shia LaBeouf (Constantine, Holes) plays a teen under house arrest that witnesses a murder at his neighbor’s house. He must convince his friends and family that what he thinks he saw is real, all without leaving the house.

The suspicious neighbor is played by David Morse, who played the pilot in Langoliers and recently had a run on House M.D. as Detective Tritter.
