Do something you love

General blogs where people write about their lives and what they do on a day to day basis are all the rage right now. There are a few people who started blogs like this a number of years ago and have been able to make their living completely from these blogs, for example dooce.com. However blogging or blogs like these will take many years to become profitable for the people who run them. If you are willing to invest that much time in a personal blog then you will have the foundation for a great eventual success. However if you were to blog about a specific subject or business then your blog can and will be much more successful in a very short time. But it has to be a subject that will keep your interest for a long period of time.

I believe you should use blogs to support your products or businesses not make blogging your business. Take a look at the most successful blogs on the internet and you will notice that they all focus on one market or niche. Engadget.com techcrunch.com and other technology blogs are extremely successful but so are blogs about digital photography or scrap booking. Find the niche or niches that you will enjoy writing about and concentrate your work into those subjects. I love internet marketing and spend a very good portion of my day learning and testing new theories and ideas about internet marketing. I love helping people, not just in internet marketing I love sharing knowledge with people about everything. Therefore it is a natural fit for me to write about and teach internet marketing. I can't understate how much doing something you love plays into the long term success of any business. I have many niches that I participate in that I don't care about and it shows in the performance of those sites. I find it hard to get motivated to add new content and make things work the way they should.

When you are deciding on the niche or niches you want to participate in make sure that the subject is one that you feel passionate about and will want to continue to write about for many years to come. Of course this does not mean that you shouldn't do the research to make sure that the niche will be profitable for you. If you have a niche where people just don't buy then you are dead in the water and your business just became a hobby. I also know that there are many people who are passionate about making money and that is enough of a motivator to continue working in any niche. Those people have the advantage of being more easily motivated to work on something that doesn't really interest them. But as a beginner I always recommend that you choose something that will keep your interest. After you have made some money and learned to inner working of a profitable Internet business then you will be able to make money in any niche you choose because of outsourcing. Outsourcing of most of the labor intensive aspects of any Internet business we become the key to long term success in many different niches. But you have to learn the basics first. If you are interested in learning how to make a website then head over to netrat.com and get not just the basics but the whole enchilada from start to finish.
