Creativity Thrown Into Question

I took a class called Fundamentals of Digital Filmmaking during my first semester of my sophmore year at college. It was my first class I had taken that counted towards my Film major, and I learned a lot in it.

My professor was great and really knew her craft. But she said something to me one day that made me rethink the entire validity of the word creativity:

I don't think anything is original anymore.

I don't remember what the conversation was that sparked that response; all I remember is that one line. I like to think of myself as a creative individual. I like to express my creativity through writing and artwork and music and other things. I also used to harbor a deep seated dislike of anything that I deemed wasn't creative.

I wasn't a big fan of remakes, of music that sampled records, or of people plagarising others in the name of creativity. Upon having that fateful talk with my Digital Filmmaking professor, that drove me to think about what creativity really was, and whether it didn't exist like my teacher believed.

A Look at Creativity

Creativity is definined as the ability to invent new ideas, concepts, things or what have you. But if you take a close look at what we call creative, you can see that there really isn't all that much originality involved.

We often talk about man creating fire when speaking about the earliest inventions. But fire wasn't anything new, it already existed in nature. Man really just created a way to make fire on command. The wheel is another example of "creativity" not really being original. In its most basic form, a wheel is really only a finely sharpened round rock.

Fast forwarding the clock, what we classify as a breakthrough in technology isn't all that revolutionary, either. This whole touch screen craze is one such example. We've been touching things to make them work for centuries! It would be more accuracte to call new inventions "renovations", becasue in essence, they are simply new, more optimal tools that provide the same old services.

When the creative lens is fixated upon art, the definition becomes even more discouraging. We all understand that art imitates life, but I don't think we internalize what that saying means. By that standard, that means that any piece of art, be it writing, music, paintings, or dance, is only a replica at its best.

That one line even throws the definition of plagarism into a discussion, because technically, everything is plagarised to some extent. If you grow up knowing how to bake cookies, and one day you decide to sell your own brand of cookies, you aren't required to cite your sources, or even name your influences! Most people do to pay homage and out of the goodness of their hearts, but you aren't required to, which is kind of strange.

Creativity Redefinied

So how can creativity ensue, when nothing is creative to begin with? When it boils down to it, I think the true definition of creativity is more akin to interpretation.

If two people were to make a movie, the same exact way with the same exact scenes, technically, they would both be original. No one can do the same thing as someone else and get the exact same results. That's one of the principle differences between man and machine.

And while I believe that no two people can produce the same thing even if they tried, that doesn't mean people should just copy each other because they are really only copying life. I feel people should take their own personal views about life and transition them into the things they create.

No two people are the same; even identical twins are not carbon copies of each other. This fact alone guarantees that creativity is inherit to everyone; it's really just a measure of exactly how creative a person can be.

I know I have heard that nothing is new argument before, slightly differently - which bears out what you're saying - same but different!

I get inspiration for stories from other stories, things people say, lines in films or whole scenes even.

So am I plagiarising?

I don't think so. To copy is one thing, but to take an element, maybe even several and then create something new from there IS creative. It shows the ability to adapt and expand on an idea.

Perhaps the concept isn't new and I have come across this discussion point a lot; that the stories we read nowadays are not strictly new, with many having similar elements as others. It's the treatment, the interaction between the character and the characters themselves that make a perhaps tired concept fresh.

But as human beings, many of us will have experiences that are similar to others. We can compare stories and as similar as those accounts may be, are they the same?

I don't think so and I feel that although there are many romantic comedies, many cops and robbers films, they all follow a similar precept yet are all different (except Runaway Bride, which it has to be said, was a poor copy of Pretty Woman).

I would like to think that the stories I write, whilst on the face of them, bear similarities to others, I put a creative twist on them to make them my own and in that way, unique.

I think that's creativity - perhaps not truly unique, but creative nonetheless.

Why does creativity need to be original? Creativity is changing a blank piece of paper, or shapeless piece of clay - even a hunk of metal - into something that a viewer can relate to. In other words, I see creativity as an agreement between the artist and the beholder. The key component is imagination, not necessarily newness.

'Creativity' incidentally is one of my favorite words. My business name, my business plan, the programs, my fake name for hubpages and just about everything relating to my life seems to be centered around that one word. If creativity does not exist I will need to rethink the way I look at life and my mission in life as well.

I believe your professor was being 'creative' in the way she viewed that word. She may not have known it.

Personally I believe that creativity does exist. Some thoughts we have, and things we do may not be original or even unique, but as long as we are not copying intentionally or subconsciously I believe we have much to offer in this world. Yes, there is nothing new under the sun, but we all have some measure of creativity in us.

If we did not, this world would be the most dull place to be. Hubpages is a good place to see creativity, and I believe creativity will exist as long as we are alive.

@Nick B: I agree with you. I used to get worried because I didn't think that creativity existed anymore, but when you think about genres, like you mentioned, you see that while they have things in common, there is enough room to be creative and do what you want to.

@denoonan: Nicely put. It's really up to the ones who view and produce creativity to determine what it truly is.

@create a page: I think my professor was trying to expand my definition of creativity, it just took a while for me to catch on, lol. We are all inherently creative, and that's one of the beautiful things about being human.

@prasetio30: Thanks for your comment. It is only now, after a few years of subliminally wrestling with the issue of creativity that I understand its true nature.

@Tom Cornett: Lol, thanks.

the concept of immitation has always been an issue as far as creativity is concerned...plato and Aristotle called mimesis the roots of creativity..it was for this Plato wanted to banish the poets from his ideal Republic...

the understanding of immitation has changed from the times of Plato and Aristole...so much so..that modern poets like T.S.Eliot said "The immature poet imitates; the mature poets steal". I recently read a misinterpreation of this..."

The immature poet imitates; the mature poet plagiarizes"....i think one has to really understand the concept of creativity and its process to come to any concrete understanding of this term.

your article comes very near to it..we all go through these transformations before we come clean of the influences we have.

Misthaven, This is thought provoking! I think God our Creator, places creativity before us everyday; each day is a new day! A new glorius created day and there will never be another day like today, yesterday or tomorrow. Now that is creativity! And yes we all are different and have varying temperaments of strengths, weaknesses and a plethora of artistic potential as well! That is simply miraculous! So yes I think that creativity still exists!

Blessings
