What are the signs of seizures in dogs?
You want to do an assessment to be sure that a seizure has occured. Here are the stages of an epileptic seizure in your animal.
- The aura is the initial phase of a seizure. This part of the seizure can last from minutes to hours. The animals can exhibit recurring pacing or licking, excessive or unusual salivating or vomiting. The animal can also have excessive barking or increased or decreased attention seeking.
- The ictal phase is the actual seizure event. The animal will have involuntary muscle tone or movement or abnormal sensations or behavior. This will usually last from seconds to minutes.
- The post-ictal period an animal can exhibit unusual behavior. These behaviors can be disorientation, inappropriate bowel / bladder activity, excessive or depressed thirst and appetite, and actual neurologic deficits, such as weakness or blindness.
If your animal is having a seizure don't put your hands in the animals mouth because the dog can clench down onto your hands. What you want to do his put a blanket down underneath the head. If your animal is by the stairs move your dog away from them. When done with the seizure rush your dog to the vets so the animal can be properly diagnosed.
