Dogo Argentino - Supreme Hunter/Killer dog
70In Argentina they needed a hunting and working dog, which could
hunt and kill wild boar, pumas and other native predators,
as well as guarding the owner, his flocks and his property.
No such dog existed in the 1920's, but the two Martinez
brothers took up the challenge, and set out to breed a dog
- the Dogo Argentino - with the required attributes.
The brothers identified which characteristics they wanted in their dog, and then over two decades bred in these attributes from 10 different breeds.
They took as their starting point the Cordoba fighting dog, then the most prized hunting dog in Argentina - the Cordoba was a cross between the Spanish mastiff and the fighting bulldog.
They knew which breeds were blessed with the particular attributes they required - these included the Pointer, the Spanish mastiff, the British bulldog and bullterrier, the wolfhound, the boxer etc etc.
The Dogo Argentino is a natural hunter, and has the inbred instinct to hunt down and kill wild boar and mountain lions single-handedly. But there is no dog more devoted or loyal to his owner.
As a natural hunter, the Dogo regards other animals - including humans - as prey, just like the wolf. In their native Argentina, many owners will simply allow the Dogo to share the prey they catch.
Reputable breeders should be particularly careful to whom they pass on the very powerful and fearsome animals. The Dogo Argentino is really a very unsuitable choice for a first-time dog owner, for training such a powerful animal calls for special understanding and techniques.
If the Dogo is to be a working dog, or a hunting or guard dog, then the puppy should be imprinted at a very early stage to regard humans, and other animals, as natural prey.
Even if not imprinted, they will still show natural aggression towards humans as towards any other animal when they perceive a potential threat to their dominance, territory or food. So as a Dogo owner, never let him run free in public, or you could have real problems with other animals - or humans!
The Argentine Dogo is a very intelligent, powerful dog which needs a firm and consistent hand.
The Dogo Argentino is a wonderful animal, bred to perfection to hunt and kill wild and dangerous prey, and to be a loyal guardian.

I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU WERE SO INFORMATIVE ABOUT THE DOGO. THANKS TO YOU I AM NOW MORE PREPARED FOR ADOPTING MY PUPPY.
"never let him run free in public, or you could have real problems with other animals - or humans!" this is garbage. I agree with possible problems with other dogs, if the dogo isn't socialized properly, but humans? And why would you imprint a dog to regard humans as natural prey?
this is a very beatifull breed of dog and as with any other breed of dog not proprrly trained there will be problems
what the hell. Im wid jade10. Who ever wrote this is an idiot. You make this breed sound like a wild animal or something.
i think this is a very good bit of info on this breed of dog, and they definately should never be regarded as a family pet. Am glad that they are banned in this country, as with the amount of dog attacks on children seems to be on the increase do we really want to chance these hunting, killing dogs running near our children??????????????????
I'm a Dogo owner, and he is an incredible family dog, protector and companion. Sadly because of articles like this, and moronic owners that turn their dogs into man eating monsters this breed is now banned in my home country and i cant take him there to live if we ever choose to go back. Thanks as#hol#s!!
Alright, my Dogo Argentino Duke was a great friend (passed away a few months ago)..Yes they are a great breed, very caring, show plenty of affection, great with kids, ruthless to intruders in the home (natural guard dogs); they don't really bark in this type of situation..they actually stalk and bite down; this is what they were bred for, this way the hog can't hear them coming. They are a breed for the experienced dog owner because it is true they have a strong hunting instinct. Maybe it depends on the family it comes from (i live in Peru). Mine had to be socialized but nevertheless they are a very dominant breed and sometimes will regard smaller animals as possible food (yes this is true),so it is very important to train them from a very early age. It isnt a dog you can really let loose at a dog park, like i said they are a dominant breed and will usually establish dominance early on with other dogs ;i ofcourse had to be careful in parks, i once had a problem with a newfoundland . Duke was a very obedient dogo but still managed to eat as many pigeons as he could get his paws on (yeah very nasty). I've never heard of a dogo hunting a human, you are making them sound like a prehistoric animal with no intelligence. Dogos are actually among the smartest breeds, they are thought to have more of an ability to memorize things then other dogs. Great family pet, very protective but also a big responsability, this isnt for someone who wants a rare breed just to have it.
My dogo is very stubburn hunter :) but I do she is extremely intelligent. However her stuburness for hunting is demanding on myself. she catches possoms (chokes them from the neck) and delivers them to the door as a reward for the family(without ever tearing it down). Vicious u might think? Not at all she is doing what she was bred for. As a dog owner you have to understand the kind breed of the dog that you plan to get. I also have a maltese and a husky and when they fight my dogo goes in a a referee to stop them! I do admit she goes in there like she is the boss, but the maltese runs the pack! She is extremely loyal and she loves to be around the family. She is incredibly great with children although she thinks she is only 10 pounds and loves to jump on everyone so I have to be extra careful since she weights 101 pound. However, being this big it is amazing how she sneaks up on the bed while sleeping and cuddles up next to me:). She plays rought but she loves to be pet and she will demand it! I have to be extra careful when going on walks because she will go front line and center as a good soldier to protect the pack when a dog or a stranger comes by. A small dog creeped up on her once and she did defend herself I bit her ear so she could stop fighting and she stopped like nothing happened. She had a hard time letting the husky and maltese share her space but she learned. So all in all dogo's are great family dogs. They require an attentive owner as they are so intelligent!. You have to be careful when you are around other dogs and socializing them at an early age is a must. They shed and eat like crazy and their tail hurts u like a wip :). But they are the most loving and loyal :0).
