Home theater: what it takes to assemble a fuss-free movie house at home.
Home theater: what it takes to assemble a fuss-free movie house at home.

Practical Home Theater

Home theaters: they used to be a collection of 8 to 16 film projectors, then on to VHS and beta tape and LP-record-sized Laserdiscs. But it’s a razor-sharp smart cutting edge technology nowadays: before us are DVD players, satellite TV systems, SXRD DLP LCD and plasma big-screen TVs. No need to sweat this very small stuff: help is at hand for you to build a basic home theater that will deliver results.

Planning

1. To turn your house into a cozy movie house, you will need for starters a DVD player, a generously proportioned video display device and digital surround sound speakers.

2. Arguably a quality home theater system blends into the family or living room. It stays inconspicuous until it is time to watch a movie.

3. If you have extra budget you may want to spruce up one room for your home cinema experience. An exclusively home cinema room can be anything from a previously unused area in your basement to a new home annex.

4. More remains to be seen about the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray disc format fracas. A few who have already observed these two technologies allege that HD-DVD's scratch more easily than the Blu-ray discs (but then again, all disks eventually do, right?). Playback machines for both are in stores now; expect in months to follow the arrival of players for both formats. Movie distributors are also releasing titles in both formats.

Making the Purchase

1. When already at the store, find a knowledgeable salesperson to assist you. Break the ice by asking a few questions using terms you have picked up from your reading and use him/her as an assistant. Be polite and ask careful questions that need clear answers. Remember that if you don’t outline what you want, the salesperson might imagine that you can be easily swayed and might think of getting a commission fast instead of your own needs. Use what you know to balance what The salesperson says.

2. Why not bring along a favorite DVD? Since you are very familiar with it, you may want to see how it looks on units you are eyeing. Request the salesperson to connect a DVD player directly to the TV to skip signal issues especially signals from the store’s media center that plays in-house audio and video.

3. Getting a trusted brand name for your video display or TV is a key play. Trusted brands like JVC or Sony have more stringent quality control. It also significantly cuts the risk of getting the counterpart of a car lemon.

4. A home theater is a considerable investment; thus, at least two window shoppings to orient yourself with quality products is certainly not overkill. Then to ensure that you are getting a fair deal (and not just a neurotically doubtful bargain), surf online to compare prices. Who knows, you may yet reel in THE thousand dollar-saving through online retailers like New Egg or Amazon.

Very informative article. I would also mention, in the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray war, there is an alternative that isn't quite as high in quality, but still makes a huge difference compared to old DVD's, and that's DVD Upconversion.

For now, I'm waiting out the Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD war and loving my DVD Upconverting Player. The resolution is not as great as HD DVD or Blu-Ray, but it's an acceptable compromise. Besides, I can't afford to upgrade my existing DVD collection. :(

Waiting out the Blu ray v. HD DVD format rivalry: my cost saving sentiments too, and the common sensical folks of CNet.com as well. Please read their take on the format war:
