Counseling is the attempt to provide encouragement and guidance to those who face a loss, a decision, or a disappointment that is devastating to them. Counseling then can stimulate growth, help people cope with problems such as inner conflict, emotions, and interpersonal tensions. It can help people to overcome life patterns that are self-defeating, causing unhappiness to good people. Counseling is then an effort to bring people into a closer relationship with themselves others, and Jesus Christ.

Christian Counseling occurs when a person recognizes that within themselves they have a problem, and allows another Christian to assist them with the problem. This occurs, not by the Counselor providing the answer, but by assisting the person in needs of Counseling to identify the problem, find answer to it in the Scriptures, and then resolve it themselves.

Christian Counseling is needed in these times because we live in a very complex society, and God is the answer to all complex problems. People today are faced with multiple problems. These may be in the form of personal, local national, or international problems. Because there are multiple problems in many people's live, and there is a lack of understanding and revelation of the World of God, these people need help out of the seeming maze they are in.

Online Counseling, Telephone Counseling, E-mail Counseling, Voice over the Internet, Instant Messaging, whatever service is right for you, can be done! If you are not recurrently psychologically distressed, but have an expressive behavioural or relationship problem of recent origin, which you can discuss rationally objectively, while at the same time feeling unquestionable hurting emotions, this method of Counseling would be fine for an individual online.

THE PROS AND CONS

This list is not complete, but it will provide you with a good initial understanding of the pros and cons of using the Internet for counselling services.

The PROS include:

You may feel more at ease getting counselling in the privacy of your home.

You may feel freer to be yourself online.

You may write about what is worrying you quicker than you would talk about it. This can bring faster resolution to problems.

You may feel more at ease writing about your problems than talking about them through e-mail!

Writing may help you to think through your problems and to get in touch with your emotions. It can bring focus, clarity, insight, and emotional relief.

You can contact your counselor by telephone, thus making the most of communication, but you do not have to present yourself in their office, or look them in the eye, which can be an benefit with problems that bring into play a sense of humiliation.

Writing add to your connection with yourself. .

You can read and re-read your emails, thus achieving greater learning.

There are more Counselor to choose from online. And it is also possible to see them "face-to-face" by using video conferencing if you have a web camera.

You can email your Counselor any time of day, and particularly when you feel the need for assistance.

You can take as long as you want to write.

While you can see your Counselor over a webcam, you do not need to be concerned that you will bump into them on the streets of your hometown tomorrow! So there is greater mystery.

The Cons: Long-term, "chronic" problems of significant emotional distress; and short-term, or recent "acute" problems of emotional disturbance. If you are chronically emotionally distressed, it is best to find a local counselor or psychotherapist, and to meet them face to face.

The CONS include:

There can be more misinterpretation by email and therefore a better need to explain things and ask questions. This can be an advantage too, as it give confidence to us to be clear and to ask questions, which is something that some people are afraid to do in person.

Online Counselors don't have access to important information about you without face-to-face sessions unless you use video conferencing with webcams. However, having occasional phone sessions as well can provide your counselor with more information.

Online Counseling is fairly new - although writing as a form of support is not new - and so it's still in its early stages as a form of Counseling.

Privacy cannot be assured over the internet, Counselors must make every effort to keep communications private, and would not on purpose or intentionally allow any meeting information to be made public! Skype.com offers secure encryption, which is superior to other systems of encoding.

Some problems cannot be resolved online.

The counselor must give genuine support, acceptance, and approval. Responding negatively to statements of approval or affirmation is an attribute of the person who has inferior self-worth feelings. Back slapping or shallow encouragement is worth little to help the person over come their dilemma. The Counselor must seek to develop understanding. By looking at past experiences of affirming or condemning can help a counselor search out a counselee's sources of poor self-worth.

All and all, online Counseling does work and can be a blessing to those in need.

As most of you know I have my Doctorate in Christian Counseling and I am a Licensed Board Certified Counselor as well. Everyone needs good Godly Counseling sometimes in their lives. Prov. 1:5 says: "A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man or woman of understanding shall attain unto wise Counsels:" God has Blessed me and I want to Bless others!
