Roots "Works of the Flesh" Gal. 5:19-21

"By Their Fruits Ye Shall Know Them" Matt. 7:20

This strongman's name seems to imply that only people who frequent prostitutes are influenced by the spirit of whoredoms. But there is more to it than that. This particular condition can be a SPIRITUAL as well as physical bondage.

The book of Hosea points up just such a case. "My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declare unto them: (witchcraft) for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God" Hosea 4:12. "They will not frame their doings to turn unto Gos: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the Lord" Hosea 5:4.

Hosea's marriage to a harlot illustrated to the nation what they were doing when they forsook God to embrace the idols and false gods of their neighboring nations. Accordingly, Hosea felt the same pain and agony on a physical level with his harlot wife that God experiences when His people are unfaithful to Him in their pursuit of other gods.

IDOLS- Although we may not actually offer sacrifices to a physical idol, whatever comes between us and our relationship to God is still an idol and thus a form of spiritual adultery, although sex may not be involved. Whatever rules us is our god, be it food, sex, diversions, sports, money, power, the pursuit of a career, video games, television, a possession, our children, a religion or a cause.

TELEVISION- Let take television as an example. We should be in church on Sunday evening to hear the Word of God, but the best movies are usually run at that time. What comes first? Which is more important in your life?

Most of us would deny that television is our god because a television junky is considered to be intellectually inferior. But personally we have noted in our services all over the United States that Sunday morning crowds. Now the problems on Sunday night may not be television. It could be sports, hunting, fishing, boating, skiing or a whole bundle of other things.

The point is that God has been shifted down the list of priorities until other things now have a dominate place in our lives that they really should have. Granted, the process is usually very subtle, but the truth is that it DOES happen.

WHAT DOMINATES YOU? Paul makes this observation, "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any" I Corinthians 6:12. Television, sports, food, video games, etc. are not evil in themselves. They only become a problem to us when they dominate our lives. They must be made to take their rightful place way down the list.

God is first, our wife or husband and family second, and so on. "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof": I John 2:15,17.

God does not want us to be "spiritual alley cats," chasing whatever pleasure that happens to be the latest fad in this world, to the detriment of our spiritual relationship with God. He wants us to be, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil." Eph. 5:16.

ADULTERY AND FORNICATION- On the other side of the coin we must also be aware that physical adultery and fornication are also the playground of this strongman. "Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that commiteth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are brought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, WHICH ARE GOD'S I Corinthians 6:13, 15, & 18-20.

Even though extra-martial relationship have become the norm in our society, we must understand that God's Word is still the same. Sexual union outside the marriage bond brings bondage and confusion in our life that chokes out the desire to please God.

WE LIVE BY FAITH- In this day of fluctuating interest rates and world-wide inflation, God's word recommends that, "the just shall live by faith" Romans 1:17. "For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lust, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

"For the love of money is the roots of all evil: which while some coverted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, where unto a good professed a good profession before many witnesses" I Timothy 6:7-12.

Our most prized possession in this life is our profession of faith. But it can become buried in our drive to pile up money. Jesus said that God clothes the lilies of the field. Lilies never get-up-tight worrying about what color they should be or when to open their petals because God care for them. How much more will He care for us. So just relax. If we want to drive ourselves in searching for something, why not go for righteous, godliness, faith, love patience and meekness as Paul suggests above. If we want a good fight why not the good fight of faith?

GLUTTONY- Gluttony is one sin we hear very little preaching or teaching on these days; probably because we are so busy practicing it! We personally notice it more than the average person we are constantly being exposed to poverty in the Third world countries where we hold our crusades. While most of the world is searching for their next meal, we in the U.S. are trying to diet off the excess-poundage we have drooping all over our body. Sadly, our "temple of the Holy Spirit" is many times composed mostly of lard.

This does not mean we should become obsessed with dieting. But discipline has to extend over into our eating habits, too. Just because the mountain of chocolate is there doesn't mean we have to climb it and eat it! lol. "for many walk of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things." Phillippians 3:18,19

SPORTS- Somethings needs to be mentioned about the sports craze that is going on these days. With the advent of all-sport cable television channels it is possible to spend the rest of your life watching baseball, football, basketball, soccer and everything in between, down to frog jumping contest.

Paul's grasp of the sports events of his day reveals that he gave more than a passing glance to them. It is not a sin to go to a ball game or watch it on television, but there is a point we can not go beyond if we want to maintain a close relationship with God. When I hear pastors bemoan the fact that their Church service I know some of God's people are not disciplining their competitive nature.

Sports stadiums today have become religions shrines for millions of people each Sunday. The players are worshipped as some kind of gods for their athletic ability and receiver tithes or salaries that are outrageous. Somehow today have become religious shrines for millions of people each Sunday. The players are worshipped as some kind of gods for their athletic ability and receive "tithes" or salaries that are outrageous.

Somehow I can't picture true saints of God running around with their mouths hanging open because some guy can kick a pigskin or hit a horsehide ball into the sands. It's exciting, yes but there is more to life than that. There is a world out there waiting to be won to Jesus. If you want a challenge, follow me around the countries where the big "WOW" in life is the next meal. That puts life into perspective real quick!

"Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God" Romans 8:12-14. That is the choice. The flesh or the Spirit; which dominate us? If we have decided to follow Jesus, we dare not entertain the works of the flesh in out lives.

They open doors to strongmen spirits who move in to oppress our body and soul and eventually our spirit if we do not take appropriate action against them.

"Dear Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus. Forgive me for not keeping You as number One in my life. Forgive me for allowing the works of the flesh the things of this world to creep in and displace You as the God of my life. I make You Lord of my life, now and forever more, and I promise to follow the instruction of Your Word."

"Satan, in the Name of Jesus I bind your spirit of whoredoms according to Matthew 18:18 that promises, "whatsoever ye shall bind on earth be bound in heaven!" I refuse to allow your paltry imitation of deity to dominate my life. I denounce your idols and rebuke you in the Name of Jesus.!!!!!!!!!"

LIFT JESUS HIGHER! ! ! AMEN! !

If you haven't accepted Christ as your Savior simply say in an audible voice, in all sincerity from the depths of your heart, "Lord Jesus Christ, forgive me of my sins and accept me as Your child. I accept You as my personal Savior and I promise to follow the instructions of Your Word from this day on. If I fail because I am human, please help pick me up so I can try again! Thank you, Jesus, for saving me from all my sins. AMEN."

tHE DEVILL just eraced all I had written. Thank you for this hub. I prayed with you and repented that the computer has taken alot of placce in my life that I used to give to God. i am guilty, let me be the first to admit the truth. I can see you are guided by the Holy Spirit in what you write-So to God be all the glory for this light to shine on hubpages! Whatever you do keep on shining your light in a lost and forlorn world. I love the lord but I too have OCD and I get off on different things and let others go. I haven't yet spent my time with the lord this morning so I'm going to do that right now. Thanks for this hub- it hit home. Father I pray that everyone who finds this hub will examine their own hearts and repent and let us put nothing in front of our relationship with you and reading your word and spreading the good news of the Kingdom. Forgive me for getting too wrapped up in learning how to use the computer and not spending as much time with you as I had been. I repent and I turn to You to make me better in Christ for your Kingdom, Amen. God bless you I pray many many people will examine their lives and get rid of things that take the place of time and Bible reading with the Lord and prayer. I pray someone will read this hub and come to know Jesus Chriat as their Savior and Lord, Amen.

As always, this hub is wonderful in its exposing of the strongholds most common to man. In my observation of the sports addiction (I'm not into sports, but merely observe behaviors of the enthusiasm, followings and what would be defined as "worship"), gambling is interlinked! People bet on sports and its root is in competition and winnings. If everyone came to church knowing they had a one in 100 chance of winning $500 every Sunday, they'd be there! (excuse the sarcasm). I also can't get over the followings of musicians and actors ~ "American IDOL" ~ speaks for itself.

I really love your writing, pastor. Keep on sharing the truth in love, which indeed includes the rebuking of Satan in the Name of Jesus! God bless you!!

An interesting hub and very well written and filled with wisdom and insight. We are a people and society filled with idols, many more than you have listed.

My past life with filled with many you have mentioned and some not mentioned, there has been extensive ministry and time with God and much prayer that has brought freedom. People are a people that are constantly tempted with idols other than God, addictions can be classified as idols as well. It is only through admittance and seeking God that you truly become free of the both.

There has never been anyone that has not been tempted, only through Hubs such as these can people see themselves through the eyes of Christ.

I stand in prayer that God reveals to me the idols that I have placed before Him. It is through the Holy Spirit they be set aside and identified for what they truly are.

Blessings as always

Aye, your presentation is strong with the truths. You have a connection with the Lord. I have found new meaning in a scripture that has puzzled me for a time. Roughly "whenever two or more of you come together, whatever you bind on earth I will also Bind in Heaven". I have heard this scripture used as a church binding together a certain act, that it would be so in heaven. Never seemed right, it now has proper inflection within my mind.

Thank you for a Sermon in print.

Our Lord is a jealous God. He wants our heart and soul and He deserves it. All mankind owes everything to Him. Instead people act as if God does not exist and puts everything under the sun and the sun too in God's stead. I hate it when I do it and I know I do from time to time and I tell Him how my heart aches for it. Love you Lotta.

Thank you my Brother In Christ for stopping by. I pray that people get serious about their salvation! Jesus is the only way to God and our only way out of hell! We all struggle and we must pick ourselves up and brush ourselves off and repent and run toward Jesus into the light, the truth, our hope! Love you no body, you have been a blessing to me and I know that it is no mistake!

Aptly put DPC, "If you want a challenge, follow me around the countries where the big "WOW" in life is the next meal. That puts life into perspective real quick!" We definitely have to have the "big picture" before us. This hub, at the same time, helps me take spiritual inventory of my questionable or dominating habits. After all, the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and it's healthy to exercise good housekeeping on a regular basis. Another great hub Sister! God bless you.

Why did you post this in the pagan area? Although it may be good from a christian perspective don't you think you would get a better response if it had been posted in the christian area?

drpastorcarlotta profile image

drpastorcarlotta  says:

Thank you It's just me for stopping by!! I posted this in paganism & wicthcraft for this reason. Many people even Christians have problems, troubles and afflictions because they have not dealt with generational curses. Generational curses keep people from being able to hear God or His true prophets. We have to ask God to break any generation curses and ask forgiveness for any sins which their relatives have committed. Yes it might get a better response, but I am trying to reach the unsave as well. They need to know the TRUTH! Because my Hubs are mostly Christian based, Christian will come to my Hub anyway and then will see my different blogs that may interest them. But an unsaved person might not. So if they are dealing with these different generational (curses) spirits and get drawned into visiting the paganism & witchcraft Hubs, I feel I have a better chance in ministering to them. At least plant a seed. Even if they get mad, I have done the work of the Lord. Thank you so much for your concern and Blessings to you!!!
