What was your most embarrassing high school moment?

always getting into trouble.....

Many will understand what I'm about to say even if my vocabulary or terminology is unfamiliar...in honor of Stylezink and her request, I'm going to reference a word I expect with her history in Hawaii as well, she will most surely recognize.

Pakalolo.

Yes, I am a new creation and I don't engage in this type of activity any longer, but my past is my past and it can't be changed. This story is mild compared to others I could share and many may have gone down a similar road.....past experiences contribute in shaping us into who we are in the present and God can use experiences one might not be too proud of in mighty and powerful ways. Besides that, I still have a sense of humor.

Anyhow, my most embarrassing moment in high school is attributed to my then regular smoking of "Pakalolo." No, I did not attend High School in Hawaii, I was here in Washington State. After having lived on the Big Island as long as I did however, there are many words from the culture there which are, and still remain after being back on the mainland more than four years, a part of my vocabulary.

Anyways, I was a sophomore who didn't even have her learners permit yet. My friend Vicki and her cousin Steve and I used to go off campus and smoke every day at lunch. Steve and I kind of had a thing for one another. His decision to allow me to drive his Ford Maverick with my having no prior driving experience aside from steering a vehicle while sitting on my daddy's lap as a little girl wasn't too brilliant.

So from what I think i remember was our town dentists parking lot, I took a right, pulled out onto main-street, headed back towards the high school parking lot. I heard a horn blaring. Then, when clear this time, I made a left into the high school parking lot and of course I was speeding, wanting anyone around to take notice. So I reached the last row, it being my intention to turn left down it and park the car. As it turned out, there were a lot of guys crossing in front of us and it seemed to me they were taking forever. I became impatient, threw the automatic transmission into reverse, and stomped on the gas without looking behind me first. The right rear tire of the Maverick ended up sitting on top of the left front tire of a baja bug, having completely shattered it's fiberglass fender. The guy with the bug was not a happy camper and neither was Steve. Steve didn't say much and remained calm at least. I was totally embarrassed, here I was thinking I was so cool, ripping around, doing just fine without a license and of course I never expected anything bad to happen...bad things only happen to other people, know what I mean?

Not only were those in the parking lot laughing at me, I was late to class and had to explain why, in front of the entire class.

So the dude w/ the bug got an estimate saying the replacement of the fender was going to cost $300. I paid half and my parents insisted Steve pay the other half since he was dumb enough to let me drive to begin with.

For Christmas that year, one of my dad's friends had cut out the police report from our little town paper from the week which reported on my little mishap...Keith mounted it and framed it (just an 8x10)and gave it to me as a gift. (I still have it to this day, but it's not hanging on one of my walls, mind you). By that time, Steve, my parents and myself could all laugh about it.

What an enjoyable story. You know, even when we are young and do foolish things, the good thing about it is when we get older, we can look back and have a good laugh about them.

Keep sharing.

thanks LisaG......your comment means a lot to me since I wasn't sure how the family of God would respond......when writing my testimony I was always cautioned to not 'glorify my past.' Yet I am real and transparent and I think my different life experiences helps me to connect w/others.

It sure does....'keep sharing'!!!

Found it quite entertaining. You can minister with anything morally good...i think?!

Nice hub Christine. Past is the stuff Pastors are made of.

Thanks Sam, glad you found it entertaining. I love your comment "past is the stuff Pastor's are made of." God definitely has the ability to take choices we make, those that are not part of what He would choose for us as a loving Father, and use them at some point in life for good.

I have a request Sam, now that I know you aren't a stuffy serious all the time type; k, here goes - would you consider changing your photo? I'm really glad it's not an avatar but you look so serious and a little intimidating! Hope you don't mind/aren't offended I asked!

As G-ma J would say, hugs! :)

That sure is quite a tale to hang on your mantle, christinekv! We all have embarrassing moments that we're not proud of but sharing them does sort of alleviate the pain a little. Although I did wince when I got to the part about the baja bug, I did enjoy your story. Everyone makes mistakes now and then, it's what makes us human. There's usually a lesson to be learnt as well so I'm sure that you must be the safest driver now. It's also great to hear that nobody was injured so it wasn't as bad as it could've been.

Thanks for sharing your entertaining story!

Your fan.

Thanks Mon, glad you enjoyed it. There were many more close calls after this one involving automobiles (and other things) so it took me a while to learn my lesson. I'm somewhat of a chip off the old block though, my dad did some pretty crazy things in his youth (and into adulthood) that make for entertaining stories to share as well.

This is a great example of an "embarrassing" high school story... it wasn't dreadful, but it was still perfectly mortifying :) Thanks for sharing!

Christinekv, Hello it me again, Debbie, I apologize! I am on the computer about 2 years and still in the process of learning it's terminology and function. I just found this site when first I commented in the abandonment site. I enjoyed your story and are glad no one got hurt and it became something you could enjoy today!

I don’t know how I missed this hub, but I’m here now.

What was my most embarrassing high school moment?  Must have been when the older girl that I was crazy about puckered up under the mistletoe calling my bluff.

I don’t know that I would have a problem with someone driving my Ford Maverick especially if it was someone who had a thing for me.  Now it was a different story when I let my best friend Bill drive my 390 Ford while I crawled over on the other side of the car and went to sleep.  I woke up when I noticed he kept accelerating every time someone tried to pass him.  But that was my 390.

Very good memories and I don’t find it offensive at all.

Thank you. ~ eddie

Hi Eddie, Debbie and Uriel (and to Debbie and Uriel, please forgive the slow response!) -

Thanks for visiting and commenting and I'm glad you enjoyed the hub.

Eddie, I can see you identifying w/ what you shared, and appreciating it in particular knowing you are a guy who is into cars. Not that I think a Maverick is anything to be excited about! My first car was a 67 Mustang and I still have a fondness (and desire to one day again have one) classic muscle cars. Speed, youth, feeling invincible can all equate to irresponsibility (or stupidity!) however and I'm glad I'm here to tell some of the tales I have to share!

On another subject, I've been really busy lately and not had much time to read or write - hope to catch up with publishings by other hubbers I appreciate soon!

Blessings!
