Homes need more security measures than they did a few decades ago when crime wasn't such as prevalent as it is today. Whatever a family can do to secure their home is money well spent of deterrents that will prevent the average house breaker think twice and move on someplace else.

When it comes to high end home security systems, some of the better systems come with the ability to record what the camera sees. Older models used to record onto videotape but newer models can now make use of digital storage devices for better image quality and greater storage capacity. One of these is the DVR security system and this is what I'll be taking a close look at in this article.

A DVR security system is becoming the more popular choice these days as the prices for high technology systems continue to come down making them more easily affordable for ordinary folks. It is this affordable trait coupled with ease of use that is making this kind of home security system ever more popular.

What is a DVR Security System?

A digital video recorder (DVR) security system is is one that utilizes at its heart a DVR recording device to capture images transmitted from the security camera or cameras mounted around your home and property.

It represents an efficient, low-cost means of home surveillance that will record motion video from either analog or digital cameras directly onto a hard drive. An added bonus is that by recording such high quality video images in digital format, the system enables the user to access live remote monitoring using a computer or cell phone from any location.

The home security camera systems setup can be used to monitor a home, an office, a retail store or warehouse remotely using any Internet enabled computer. This can enhance the security of any business or property.

Similarly, these high tech DVR systems have greatly enhanced the remote and covert surveillance capabilities of such agencies as the military, government and law enforcement.

How Does a DVR Security System Work?

The DVR security system works on the principle of digital capture of images or motion video produced by remote cameras mounted strategically to give am all-round view of a residential property or business premises.

A graphic card installed within the DVR surveillance system (known as the DVR card) captures the signal from a camera and then saves the video on the system's hard drive in digital format. Many DVR security systems require almost no maintenance and can digitally record video and images for very long time periods, sometimes up to several months without a break. The amount of video that can be archived is determined by several factors, including the hard drive's capacity, the number of cameras hooked up to the system and the video frequency measured in frames per second (FPS).

The number of cameras that are required in this type of security system really depends upon the overall size and of course they layout of the property to be monitored. Generally, one camera needs to be installed approximately every 1000 square feet.

Some security DVR systems have an audible beeps that alerts the user to the hard drive reaching its video footage limit. When that happens and the hard drive becomes full, the DVR unit will stop recording unless it has been set up to over write the oldest recorded footage.

The instant retrieval of any section of archived digital video is one of the advantages of the DVR security system and is what makes it such a popular choice. Most closed circuit television (CCTV) systems now utilize DVRs to store video images. This advanced technology of a DVR security system gives it a huge advantage over the older style VCR system because of its ability to produce high quality digital picture for recording and playback with instant access to certain points in the recording.

The lower cost of these DVR systems these days makes them the perfect choice for home or business security monitoring to protect your home or business premises and bring peace of mind.
