Make Money Writing for eHow
91My eHow articles have made over $20,000 so far
I write how-to articles for the eHow web site and am very pleased with my earnings. As of fall 2009, I've earned more than $20,000 on eHow.com in total monthly residual income payments for my online content articles. I only made $29 my first full month on the site (November 2007) but now, with just under 400 articles, I've earned over $1,000 a month for more than a year.
When I started writing for eHow's Writers Compensation Program, there was no discussion of eHow earnings nor the potential to bring in a good part-time income with the site. I discovered it for myself, and shared my method and success tips in my eHow eBook.
Here's what I wrote in this Hub in early 2008:
Several months ago, the online content company I worked for as an independent contractor announced there would be a month off between contracts. Since I depended on the contract for a large portion of my freelance writing income, I had to start looking for a replacement quickly.
I knew about eHow already, but had never written for them directly. They recently launched a Writer's Compensation Program, which offers writers a share of the ad revenue earned from the pages they write.
Many are reluctant to sign up with eHow because the site is secretive about how earnings are calculated and what share of the ad revenue writers receive. I decided to give it a whirl with an article I had been planning to write for the content company. I figured I had almost nothing to lose. I would have been paid $11 for the article otherwise, and was curious what it would earn on eHow.
So far, one of my first eHow articles has earned $35.28 in 2.5 months. If it continues at the same rate for the rest of the year, it will earn $169.34 in 12 months. [In fact, the article went on to earn over $287 in 12 months.]
Shortly after I wrote my first article and saw my earnings begin to pick up, I started writing more short how-to articles. Money was part of the motivation; as a freelance writer, money is important.
I also enjoyed sharing my knowledge on the Web for others to come accross and hopefully benefit from. I chose topics I knew about and could research easily from my home library, so the writing process was pretty smooth.
Another reason I kept writing was knowing that I was writing "for myself" now. My rights to my work were mine. I retained control over my article, and could edit or remove it at any time. I could also use my real name if I chose, and have a byline to show others.
I also liked the fact that I didn't simply receive a one-time payment. With eHow, I would keep earning money for the articles I wrote months ago.
Online Writing Income
Earning Passive Income
I have over 350 articles in my eHow library. I'd like to create a large enough collection that I can keep earning substantial passive income from eHow even if I quit writing altogether. I figured, if my articles earn an average of $3 a month, all I need to do is divide my passive income goal (say $4,000 a month) by 3 and that's the number of quality articles I need to have online (1,300 ... yikes, that's a lot of writing.)
I enjoy freelance writing, so writing "for myself" at places like Hub Pages and eHow makes sense as it allows me to create streams of somewhat residual income that continue long after I've published the articles.
HubPages is great for longer articles and essays; eHow only works for short how-to style pieces. It's good, as a writer, to have both platforms for my creativity.
As far as I know, the share of ad revenue from eHow is the only stream of income from the site, although you can also link your eHow articles to your website, Hub pages or other things you'd like to promote. They do not have an affiliate program for referring new writers, as Hub Pages does.
If you're interested in another stream of income from your online writing, check out eHow. You might be surprised ... I was.
Maximizing eHow Earnings & Residual Income
After 24+ months of writing eHow articles professionally, I've discovered through trial and error what works best and what categories and topics are the biggest earners. I have answered dozens of emails and personal messages to eHow users, giving them tips on the best ways to increase their eHow earnings. Since I am a passionate advocate of passive and residual income streams, I love to see writers succeed at eHow and other revenue-sharing sites.
I decided to write an eBook on eHow and residual income to summarize and expand on the eHow writing process, maximizing residual income and sharing my own earnings at eHow as well as the success of many other writers there.
I wish I had had this information when I started writing for eHow, but at the same time it was a great learning process for me. I'm continuing my eHow writing as well as building up other passive income streams at the same time. I love that my writing will keep benefitting me down the road.
Write Creative Articles
Choosing eHow Topics
Choosing good writing topics for eHow is important for maximizing your earnings, especially as the how-to library grows and more topics are taken. However, there's always a niche that still needs to be covered.
New technology is a great area, as there is a time lag between when the items are released and people start writing about them.
Think of your hobbies and consider doing a how-to series on an aspect of that ... for example, how to care for motorcycles or how to care for different animal species.
Even if a topic is covered, you may be able to write a better article that drives more traffic by choosing your keywords carefully. I use Wordtracker and Google's Adsense Keyword suggester tool to come up with new ideas.

Make How-To Videos, too.
eHow recently launched how-to videos, an excellent niche for you to consider as it is virtually unexplored and wide open for video titles. Use a digital camcorder and simple editing tools to create basic how-to videos that can then be uploaded to eHow.
You'll still need to give the steps in written format, but having a how-to video will put your submission way ahead of the game.
As the web 2.0 grows daily, video clips are huge. Get in on this trend and earn more money from ad revenue and affiliates.

Very interesting - thanks for the info.
I've thought about eHow articles and videos. I've seen a number of the videos on youtube. How's the animal section?
Edit- I just checked out the animal section.. It's filled with poor info. Sad.
How exactly do you earn with eHow. Trying to weigh the pros before I sign up.
interesting, i wonder how many pageview were needed in order to raise that $35
Great article; very informative too. I will surely try it out; but, right now, I want to make a success of hub pages and my own personal blog. Cheers! :)
Great article, maybe I will try it....every little bit helps right????
Thx
Lissie's right - eHow accepts anyone as a member, but will only pay you if you're a legal resident of the United States.
I am from Australia so this doesn't really help me. They need to open up the payment to international members. Plenty of great freelance writers over here!
I am interested and will look into this a bit more! Very good hub. Thanks!
This is a great hub, very informative. I'm just beginning to expand my article writing and appreciate your sharing ehow. Thanks!
Hi from Bizewriter@ehow --- You explained the process well. Passive income --- yes, most important in today's market and just plain smart!
Why doesn't ehow accept international writers? Most freelance writing sites do.
Thanks for the info. I've been considering e-how as a passive way to earn a bit of cash and was wondering how it worked in the long run.
I was chucklin as I read your fantastic Hub. I. too, have done the math, re: how many article I have to produce to earn around 2000.00 per month.
I also agree whole heartedly with your thoughts about revenue shares. I think that writers do well to see the lng range picture: an artilce may not earn a huge amount but if you keep getting paid over and over again on it, this is a far better scenario over the long term.
Thanks for the info. I also write articles for places and for myself. I have just recently begun writing for eHow. I have read some of your articles on eHow also. You are a great writer!
Lots of great info here, thanks for this hub! Been wondering about whether to bother with eHow, will check it out.
ehow is still a great website for Non US residents providing that you have your own blog or website. You can use ehow for Anchor text link purposes which will in time rank your own website higher in the search engine ranking's
Excellent advice, as always, WriterGig. Love your stuff at eHow, and it looks like you're the go-to person for Hubpages, too!
thanks for your advice... nice hub
Good point. The idea of passive, incrementally piling up income, especially when you are getting validated as a writer, is never a bad thing. I noticed you mentioned having written an ebook. I haven't checked it out yet, but it seems to be positioned in an earning model similar to what affiliate marketing (another context where passive income can be accomplished, after some work).
Essentially, the ebook/email/blog targets audiences already interested in your topic, allowing you to entice them even more; and then you have links to sites that sell products within the recommended experience in your ebook/email/blog. Then you earn a piece when your readers click on the links and buy a product.
It's not a bad idea, and considering your writing skill, I was wondering if you'd share your thoughts on this kind of dual website promotion and income generation for people. I'm an Internet marketing enthusiast, and I'm always open to new ideas and approaches.
Great article, WriterGig.
I also got a lot out of reading your ebook about writing for eHow. I have had a lot of fun writing eHow articles, and I love how active the eHow message boards are.
Thanks very much for all the helpful information. You are very generous with your knowledge about how to succeed as an online writer.
Great tips on maximizing eHow income. Nice work! Thanks for passing along your wisdom.
Thank's for sharing this, I just try eHow and just publish my first post. I'll see what happened with my article. Great hub :)
Great article! Very helpful and inspiring. I just signed up with EHow and am excited to start posting articles and see what happens.
Ok. Based on ur experience with online writing, if my goal were to make 2500$ in a year, approx. 210 a month, how many good articles would I have to write?
I have gone thru eHow, but being an Asian, (India) its of no use to me as a non-resident of the US. Which websites do u think I should frequent?
I'll check this space for more in a few days. :)
I am going thru ur ebook oin ehow, to see how I can write more effectively on other websites.
Interesting article. I don't think they allow videos anymore, though. :*( I found out about eHow from www.WriteForEhow.com, and I registered already. I wrote ten articles, and was so happy when I earned some money. I will be writing more, and hoping they bring back the ability to make videos!
I'm from New Zealand.
Can I join eHow?
Good article ! Thumbs up !
VC -you can join but you won't get paid. Only people in the US get paid.
Probably the first thing you should've said is that it'S for US residents only. :(
I ran across this article about writing for eHow, which you wrote 2 years ago. Are you still writing for eHow? I only see 6 articles on Hub Pages under your name. How do you feel about Hub Pages? I have a personal blog and I've written 35 pages for Squidoo, but I'm exploring other writing sites.
That is really cool, I didn't know you could earn from writing in ehow. I think it must be a very good site, which different from other article directories.
Very well written hub .....
very much informative ......
Thank you very much for your great hub, for good advice, good wishes and support. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.
Great Post, I have signup as member many months ago, but unfortunately I am not American residence, too bad I cannot join in the writer program.
very good hub, I to have written some hubs for ehow. Only 5 hubs have been up about 3 weeks with about 400 views. Still no money in my account, guess i will have to wait to see if its worth writing any more.

sounds great provided one lives in the US
I have noticed lately that quite a few ehow articles are ranking pretty high. Hmm!! Might have to give it a try. Thanks for the great info!
I had tried earnticle in the past and it never picked up, the site eventually closed recently. I tried Associated content but earnings seem to low again ($3 per article or $1.50 per 1000 impressions). After reading your earnings I am getting tempted to try eHow.
This is great information. I'll have to check it out. Thanks.
eHow seems quite lucrative idea, but alas! being an non-US resident I can't join that. Do you know any other forum where one can write and earn good some?
Wow, I got all excited when I read your article. I've wondered about writing for eHow, but I'm Canadian. It's really frustrating to find websites that only support legal residents of the U.S. It's happened to me with other sites as well. Bleh. How frustrating.
I just started using eHow and have decided it has potential. Now to focus my articles better and see where it takes me. Good Luck everyone
You can not get paid for writing articles on eHow if you are from outside the USA. That said, useful enough for backlinks.
why cant they accept other countries? too poor?
very informative, already writing for ehow but some great advise.
What are your best tips for spreading your eHow pages and getting more traffic with them? Anyone can answer this by the way. Please answer
Thanks for the great information. I have always been curious about ehow and now that I see what great traffic it gets and that it has a page rank of 8/10! I think I need to get over there to start writing ASAP!
