A lot of people love to listen to their ipod or other brand of mp3 player. Almost every digital music player you buy comes with a set of earbuds or earphones and many people are fine with using these to listen to their music. Other more particular listeners would never listen to their music through a cheap set of earphones, opting instead to shell out hundreds of dollars for carefully crafted devices that yield amazing sound reproduction. Where ever you fall in this range of how you like to listen to your music, you will likely face a point in time where you will be shopping around for a pair of new earbuds. Either your cheap, free set gets lost or breaks or you just want something different from what you have been provided by Apple, Sony or whomever you brought your mp3 player from. The point of this hub is to cover the basics concerning what you might want to think about and look for when you are ready to buy a new set of earbuds. Many of the finer details will not be covered but you can do a bit more research once you have your decision narrowed down by reading what you can find here.

Earbud Choices

If you simply want a replacement for your broken free earbuds, and were happy with what you had, then you do not need to worry about much. Go to Amazon, a store that sells electronics or where ever and buy a new cheap set. For the rest of you, it might do you well to consider things like the following: fit, noise blocking capability, active noise cancellation, wireless technology and sound fidelity. That is quite a bit to think about but we can deal with all of this just one step at a time.

Fit

There are two different aspects of fit that most people are concerned with. One is the fit of the earbuds in your ear. There are earphones that fit far into your ear canal. These are typically earbuds that have noise cancelling or noise blocking capabilities. While this kind of design is fine for many people there are a few folks that find this quite uncomfortable. Most cheap earbuds are not as obtrusive. They have a simpler design that only slightly reaches into the ear canal. These kind of earbuds may or may not be very good at staying in your ears. This can be a problem if you are doing any type of physical activity, which gets us to the other aspect of fit. If you want to listen to your mp3 player while you are exercising you want earphones that can withstand the jolting around and stay in place. There are models that have over the ear hooks, which can help them stay in place in your ear.

Noise Blocking Earbuds

This is an enhancement that a lot of people using mp3 players like to have. There is no great technology advance here. Noise blocking comes as a result of passively keeping environmental sound from getting through your ear canal. The better your earbud seals your ear canal, the less you will hear of the outside world. Models that feature noise blocking generally pay more attention to producing an earbud that seals your ear very well. Since no one size fits all many of the pricey noise blocking earbuds even have a few different sized and shaped foam pads that allow you to pick an arraignment that fits you best.

Noise Canceling Earbuds

This is a feature that uses what is referred to as active noise canceling. Sensors listen for sound coming in from the environment, assess their wavelengths and then produce sounds that cancel out the incoming noise. It is not a perfect system but does work well for things like jet engines, train noise or other constant sounds. A few less appealing aspects of this technology for earbud use is its need for a power source and the need to fit the extra parts into the earphones. Lugging around another device that requires batteries can be a pain.

Wireless Earbuds

The great need here is eliminating some of the birds nest of wires that results from carrying around your mp3 player with your earbuds. There are a few different technologies to choose from. Bluetooth, as one option, seems a no brainer. So many devices have bluetooth why would you not choose this? It just so happens that the other technology, Kleer, is made to transmit music at a much higher standard than Bluetooth. The sound quality is not even close in a comparable Bluetooth device. One downside is you do have to pay dearly for Kleer technology. Another aspect to consider with wireless earbuds is they do have to have a transmitter and receiver in order to work. There are two solutions for receivers. One is to have a receiver in each earbud. This leads to the bulky earphones you see pictured here. The other option is to have a central receiver, say that hangs behind the head, and have the earbuds attached to that single receiver. This may be done with wire or with a plastic U shaped device that resembles a small headset.

Fidelity

Audiophiles that demand great sound can find some really good earbuds. The only problem is you will have to pay dearly for that privilege. The Shure earbuds shown in the photo are just one example. They cost about $300 but are not the most expensive set of earphones you can find. It is at least satisfying to know that spending good money will allow you to hear music reproduced in rich detail. If you have the cash and are not afraid that you will lose or otherwise mangle your earbuds, a high end option may be right up your alley.
