The Two Keys to Making Money with Adsense
How do you make money with Adsense? Well, essentially there are two primary keys to doing this. The first key to making money with Adsense is content, the second is traffic.
The first key is that you need to have content, and lots of it. Another important factor when looking at content is that this content needs to be correctly optimized for the right keywords. Since Adsense uses your keyword optimization to determine the ads it sends to you, ensuring that your content is correctly optimized will mean that your ads are relevant to what your visitors are looking for and so they will be more likely to click through.
The second key is traffic, and lots of it. Since not everyone that visits your website is going to click on your Adsense ads (and in fact, only a small portion will) it is necessary to get lots of visitors in order to increase the chances of them clicking on your ads and you making more money. When getting traffic to your Adsense site you also need to bear in mind Adsense's rules regarding traffic generation and don't use any methods that they do not approve of.
Although there are other factors you need to take into consideration when using Adsense these are your two most important factors - without content and traffic you will not be able to make money with Adsense.

Experimentation is the Key to Adsense Success
Another key to succeeding at making money with Adsense is experimentation. Adsense offers a wide range of ad formats, colors, and there are different places on your website where you can place these ads. In order to know what works for your website you need to experiment.
In general it can be said that large rectangles placed above the fold (so people don't need to scroll down to see the ad) and in blending or complimenting colors work best; but this will differ from website to website.
Create Adsense channels that will allow you to test which ads people are clicking on, on your web pages and then experiment with this until you find the format that gets the most click throughs and makes you the most money.
Keyword Optimization on Adsense Websites
Earlier on this hub we mentioned that keyword optimization of your content is essential to getting the correct ads and therefore more click throughs, but how do you optimize your content for the keywords you want?
Thoroughly Research the Keywords You Want to Use
For selecting the keywords you want to use I would suggest two types of keyword research. The first is to simply look at how large the search volume is in relation to the competition (the same keyword research you would do for search engine optimization). The next is to look at how much Adwords advertisers are paying for these keywords. Both of these can be done with the Google Adwords keyword research tool. Although you will not earn exactly what the Adwords advertisers are paying and this may vary quite considerably it still gives you an idea of where you will earn more and where you will earn less.
Use Your Primary Keyword Phrase in the File Name
For each page of Adsense content you create, whether it is on your own website or on a site like Hub Pages, you should use a file name (or URL) that has your primary keyword somewhere in it. Your URL is the first thing that search engines see and so helps with keyword optimization.
Use Your Primary Keyword as Your Page Title
You should also use your primary keyword phrase in your page title that people see. On websites like Hub Pages this means naming your hub with your primary keyword, while on your own website this would involve putting it between <h1> tags.
Use Your Primary Keyword in Bold Somewhere Near the Top of Your Page
If you are writing an article then this can be used as a sub-heading for the second paragraph. If you use Hub Pages then name one of your modules near the top of the page with your primary keyword.
Scatter Keywords and Variations throughout Your Content
You also need to ensure that your primary keyword as well as other keywords and their variations are used throughout your content. Different people have different ideas about the percentage of your content that keywords should take up and this varies from about 3%-15% but with Adsense you can experiment - try different densities and see which brings the most relevant ads. Personally I prefer a slightly higher density ratio.
A Warning to End
Before finishing this article I just want to provide you with one warning regarding keyword optimization - do not focus on keyword optimization to the extent that you deter visitors. If your keywords are not naturally included in your content then you can actually drive visitors away and if you don't get any visitors then you will not make money with Adsense.
Keyword optimization of your content is essential to providing relevant ads on your website that your visitors will want to click on. In order to do this you need to include carefully selected keyword phrases at specific places throughout your content. In doing this though, do not neglect your visitors and ensure that you always have well-written content that appeals to your visitors as well.
