Silver has been used down the centuries as a media of exchange (money), for adornment, and for more utilitarian purposes such as vessels to hold liquid. The earliest Egyptians didn't have a word in their language for silver, only gold and electrum - an alloy of gold and silver found naturally. When silver was first introduced it was considered more valuable than gold, most likely because it was rarer. This may be verified because silver jewelry at the time was thinner and weighed less than comparable to gold jewelry. And silver items during the Old Kingdom of Egyptian rule were listed above gold items in household inventories.

In the middle Egyptian Kingdom gold was valued at about double that of silver. One of the first measurements of value was the silver shat. It was a flat round silver disk of a specific weight. It was not used as coinage per se but as a measurement of value. A cow was valued at 8 shats while a modest house was valued at 10 shats. One could exchange the house for the cow and demand an additional 2 shats of beer, bread, or other goods.

The Egyptians used silver by itself, in conjunction with gold, and as an overlay of copper. Solid silver coffins did appear but in most cases silver was used as a trimming or overlay.

Silver, as well as gold, jewelry in ancient Egypt was worn for decorative purposes and served a religious purpose. An amulet was thought to have spiritual powers that were bestowed on the person wearing it. An amulet is the representative symbol of a power fashioned into a concrete form, such as jewelry. For example: The beetle or scarab represented rebirth and was often worn by the deceased when they were entombed to help them in their journey to the afterlife.

Today Egyptian jewelry is much sought after for its beauty and workmanship. For some the spiritual powers are primary reason for purchase. Since the price of wholesale silver is much less than gold and ancient silver jewelry was more highly prized than gold, quite a bit of modern day Egyptian jewelry is available in silver.

What Are The Types of Ancient Egyptian Silver Jewelry

The earliest known records of jewelry making were recorded by the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians used silver to fashion many objects but perhaps the most interesting is the jewelry they made and wore.

Two forms of ancient Egyptian jewelry which don't really have an equivalent art form elsewhere in those times was the pectoral and headdress. A pectoral was a breast plate worn over the chest and hung by two "ribbons" behind the wearer's neck. It was much more than a necklace and was thought to be a portable shrine to announce the wearer's godliness. Another form of jewelry was the headdress, a combination of wig, crown, beads, and precious jewels.

Amulets were commonly worn as jewelry. Amulet is derived from the Latin words "a method of defense." Prehistoric burial grounds have turned up amulets made of stones, bones, and other objects most likely put in a small leather bag and worn on the person's body. The Egyptians used amulets extensively. However theirs were carved symbols rather than a bag of trinkets.

Amulets were commonly made with a ceramic, called faience, made of crushed quartz or sand, lime and ash and was coated with a glaze. The glaze could be copper which gave a turquoise sheen. Precious stones could be added. If the wearer was wealthy, or of high social standing, the amulet would be made of silver or gold.

Symbols in Egyptian Jewelry include:

Frogs as an aid for fertility. Frogs disappeared during the dry season and then reappeared when the Nile flooded as if my magic.

Beetles or Scarab was symbol for rebirth as well.

The well known Ankh was and still is a symbol of eternal life.

The ouroboros, a snake in a circle with its tail in its mouth, is another symbol of rebirth.

The Eye of Horus has six parts representing the six senses. It was thought to protect the wearer from evil in both life and the afterlife.

These symbols were used in bracelets, the ouroboros is a natural for a bracelet, as charms on a bracelet or necklace.

Ancient Egyptian jewelry is the inspiration of much modern day jewelry design. For those who collect jewelry, buying jewelry wholesale makes sense. The discounted prices allow the buyer to obtain more jewelry, and sometimes of a better quality than retail sources.
